Bolzano's Analytic Proof of the Intermediate Value Theorem Bernhard Bolzano (17811848) After the rapid advances in calculus and its applications in the 18th Century by the Bernoullis, Euler, Lagrange, Lacroix and others, it became apparent through contradictions and paradoxes that there were gaps in the foundations. For example, functions that could not be expressed as power series, series which did not converge, Maclaurin series which converged but not to the function from which they were derived, series of continuous functions whose limit was not continuous, functions which were continuous on a domain but not differentiable anywhere, branching of solutions to differential equations, definition of derivative for functions with complex domains and so on. It was clear that the most important lacks were firstly, a logically coherent definition of limit, and secondly, criteria for convergence of arbitrarily defined series. Behind these of course was a need for an axiomatic definition of real numbers with which to work. One of the first to attack this problem was Bernhard Bolzano, a Czech priest of Italian descent who was Professor in the Philosophy of Religion at the University in Prague, then part of the Austrian empire. The Chair had been expressly established by the Emperor Franz I to counter the spread of enlightenment in Europe following the French Revolution, but he chose the wrong incumbent. Bolzano spread his own enlightened ideas in his lectures. He was eventually dismissed and even arrested on suspicion of heresy. His philosophical training attracted him to questions about the foundations of mathematics, including infinity and its paradoxes, and the properties of real numbers.

Laplace, Pierre Simon de Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor, Nacido en Mar. 3, 1845, muerto en Ene. 6, 1918, era un matemático ruso-alemán mejor conocido como el creador de la TEORIA CONJUNTISTA y por su descubrimiento de los números transfinitos. También adelantó el estudio de las series trigonométricas, fue el primero en probar la no numerabilidad de los números reales, y hizo contribuciones significantes a la teoría de la dimensión. Cantor recibió su doctorado en 1867 y aceptó una posición en la Universidad de Halle en 1869, donde permaneció. Estrechamente relacionado al trabajo de Cantor en la teoría de los conjuntos transfinitos estuvo su definición del continuo como un conexo, conjunto perfecto. Nunca dudó de su absoluta confianza en su trabajo, pero seguidamente del descubrimiento de las paradojas de la teoría de conjuntos, el dejó la teoría de los conjuntos transfinitos a matemáticos más jóvenes tales como David HILBERT, Bertrand RUSSELL, y Ernst Zermelo. Laplace, Pierre Simon de Niels Henrik Abel Nació: 5 de Agosto de 1802 en Frindoe (cerca de Stavanger), Noruega Murió: 6 de Abril de 1829 en Froland, Noruega Abel, Niels Henrik , matemático noruego, el primero en demostrar de forma concluyente la imposibilidad de resolver con un proceso elemental de álgebra general las ecuaciones de cualquier grado superior a cuatro. Después de estudiar en la Universidad de Cristianía (hoy Oslo) pasó dos años en París y Berlín y un año antes de su temprana muerte fue nombrado instructor de la universidad y escuela militar de Cristianía. Su aportación fundamental fue la teoría de las funciones. Una importante clase de funciones trascendentales se denominan (después de su descubrimiento) como las ecuaciones, grupos y cuerpos abelianos. El teorema del binomio fue formulado por Isaac Newton y el matemático suizo Leonhard Euler, pero Abel le dio una generalización más amplia, incluyendo los casos de exponentes irracionales e imaginarios.
