...harmonische Improvisationen

Krystyna M. Kuperberg
Aperiodic Dynamical Systems
San Antonio, Texas, 1999 Previous Index Next Krystyna Kuperberg started her graduate work in topology in 1966 under the supervision of Karol Borsuk. She obtained a master's degree at Warsaw University and left Poland in 1969 to live in Sweden. In 1972 she moved to Houston and continued the graduate work that she started in Warsaw. She obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1974 at Rice University studying with W.H. Jaco. That year, she and her husband took tenure track positions at Auburn University. Kuperberg was promoted to Full Professor in 1984 and was awarded an Alumni Professorship at Auburn in 1994, During the 24 years of her tenure at Auburn she visited Oklahoma State University in 1982-83, the Courant Institute in 1987, MSRI in 1994-95, and briefly, the University of Paris at Orsay in the summer of 1995. For many years Kuperberg worked primarily in topology, with some interest in discrete geometry. In 1987 she solved an old problem of Knaster concerning bi-homogeneity of continua. In the late 1980's she became interested in fixed points and topological aspects of dynamical systems. In 1993, she constructed a smooth counterexample to the Seifert conjecture, a smooth vector field on the three dimensional sphere without compact orbits. She continued the work on aperiodic flows jointly with her son, and she still works on related problems. Since 1993, she gave over 50 lectures on the subject, including an AMS Plenary Lecture in March 1995, an MAA Plenary Lecture in January 1996, and an ICM 1998 invited talk.

Abstracts: Borsuk Acta Palaeontologica Polonica An almost complete lizard specimen discovered from the Baltic amber of middle Eocene age is described and considered conspecific with the first Baltic amber lizard Succinilacerta succinea (Boulenger, 1917). The new specimen demonstrates that the typical lacertid morphotype was fully developed by the middle Eocene. This is in conflict with a possible derivation of all the extant lacertids from a common ancestor of no earlier than Oligocene age based on the recent albumin-immunological and karyologic analyses using molecular clock methodology. Outgroup analysis of the lacertid pileus characters is applied to reconstruct the order and rate of appearance of character states during the pre-Oligocene section of phylogeny of the lacertid clade theoretically beginning by about the Late Jurassic. Two synapomorphies are proposed for the whole lacertid clade, including Eocene Plesiolacerta: frontoparietal scales largely overlapping the parietal table with a corresponding central position of the interparietal, and presence of the occipital. Plesiolacerta is the only stem lacertid known.

Many of the articles contain extensive bibliographies of the writings of the people studied, and of auxiliary and secondary literature. The first article in this volume, Felix Hausdorff (1868-1942) , by Gerhard Preuss, in a way sets the tone for the entire collection of articles. Preuss quotes Hausdorff's work Das Chaos in Kosmische Auslese Chaos in Cosmic Selection Auslese can connote an idea of choice as in the English choice specimen , or even a choice selection State of the world is a filled timespan of length zero, just as a moment is an empty timespan of length zero. The state of the world is to the filled timespan as the moment is to the empty timespan or as the point is to the line. Filled time is a continuum of states of the world, simply extended, just as the empty time is a continuum of moments, simply extended, and the line is a continuum of points simply extended."
