Originally published in Joyce Studies Annual
From the earliest reception of Finnegans Wake , the intertextual dimension of Joyce's last book has been of central concern to readers and students alike. Harry Levin wrote of the "encyclopedic sweep of Earwicker's fantasies" (Levin, 124) and James S. Atherton devoted a whole book to the problem of Joyce's "extraordinarily wide" reading and on the "amazing variety" of books on which Finnegans Wake is based. Some of the books Joyce used, Atherton continues, were mentioned in letters to friends, mostly in the elaborate correspondence with Miss Weaver, but not all of them: "Indeed, his usual method was to make use of a book without mentioning it to anyone, as far as we know, and then to insert a reference to the book, as a kind of acknowledgement, somewhere in his own text" (Atherton, 19). The main reason why The Books at the Wake has turned out to be one of the most valuable early studies is that Atherton was instrumental in showing the abundance of books Joyce referred to in Finnegans Wake , from the Bible, the Book of Kells and the Egyptian Book of the Dead to B. http://www.soane.org/soanebuildings.html
A Chronological List of Sir John Soane’s Building Projects This list is of the principal architectural works of Sir John Soane. It does not include student projects such as the Triumphal Bridge, nor does it list the many buildings Soane surveyed for leases or for legal cases. Also excluded are the many smaller works which were simply repairs to existing buildings. The date under which a project first appears is the date when Soane started work on the commission. Subsequent building campaigns on the same site are listed in this first entry. Each entry is arranged in the following way - Location/Client/nature of works/outcome To save space the following abbreviations are used: unex.............. alts ...................alterations unex .................unexecuted dem ..................demolished exts ...................extensions ........................not known exec ..................executed Standard County abbreviations are used: Sq .....................Square Pl ......................Place St ......................Street Where the archives left by Soane are not conclusive, or where the physical evidence has been demolished or rebuilt the extent of Soane’s contribution or even if the work was executed at all, is sometimes unclear. The use of ‘dem’ implies that the work was executed and demolished. ‘House dem’ means that it is not known if the Soane work was executed and the building has been demolished. Sometimes Soane’s designs were executed by a local builder and so what was built is a local interpretation of Soane’s drawings. ‘Executed’ does not imply the survival of all or part of a building. ‘Remodelled’ implies a major remodelling of the building, from which the Soane work may or may not have survived.

Co-writer/executive producer/director NEIL JORDAN is an Academy Award- winner for Best Original Screenplay for "The Crying Game," for which he also received a Best Director nomination. Jordan then went on to direct "Interview With The Vampire," the blockbuster version of Anne Rice's novel, with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas, and "Michael Collins," the epic story of the Irish revolutionary leader, starring Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts, Alan Rickman and Aidan Quinn. "The Butcher Boy" is Jordan's tenth motion picture as a director. Following his critically acclaimed debut with the powerful atmospheric thriller, "Angel," he went on to make the adult fairy tale "The Company of Wolves" with producer Stephen Woolley. His third film, "Mona Lisa," a romantic thriller set against the backdrop of London's sleazy street life, received widespread international recognition and several awards, including Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for Bob Hoskins. He then directed the supernatural comedy "High Spirits," with Steve Guttenberg, Darryl Hannah and Peter O'Toole, and the comedy thriller "We're No Angels" with Robert De Niro and Sean Penn. He returned to Ireland to make "The Miracle," a magical coming- of- age drama with Beverly d'Angelo and Donal McCann, before the enormous success of "The Crying Game."
