Just on border of the city of Zagreb (Yugoslavia) a modern glass and concrete building is named Boscovich Institute. There is being performed a research in physics and chemistry. In a garden there is a bronze statue, by famous sculptor Mestrovic, of a figure wearing priest's robes and deep in thought with his elbow on a globe. The inscription reads 'Rugjer Josip Boskovic 1711 - 87.' But only a few of the older school of physics remember having heard of Boscovichian atoms. As noted per David Deutsch - Theoretical physicists ignore their History. Yet, 60 years ago, and for 150 years before that, Boscovich had been widely known as a natural philosopher and astronomer. "Boscovich's theory was 200 years ahead of its time and could not be properly appreciated until modern ideas on relativity and quantum theory had replaced the billiard - balls and elastic jellies of the last century." – we can read in 'New Scientist 6 March 1958'. The Greatest Theoretical Physicist was Roger Boscovich. He was 18th century Jesuit who proposed an Unified Field. He was Helmholtz and Kelvin. Boscovich is the missing link between Newton's ideas and Einstein's ideas. Without him the physics community present the fiction that Einstein's ideas come forth with no precedent. It is quite a mysterious gap that Academia hardly ever mentions him. The real lineage of tradition could be: Newton - Boscovich - Einstein - Tesla.

THE ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY : BIRTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Astronomical Observatory is the first institute of scientific research that Milan has ever had; it goes back to 1764 and it is still operating. Since 1983 the Observatory has been open to the public with a permanent exhibition of instruments and archives.
The University of Milan, the Cassa di Risparmio delle Province lombarde and FIAR ltd Milan, gave contributions to Brera. The University of Milan is responsible for the safekeeping and tutelage of the Observatory.
In 1760 after the discovery of a comet by two Jesuit fathers some new instruments for astronomical observation were bought.
The astronomer La Grange was invited to choose an exact geographic location for the Observatory. In 1764 Father Pallavicini convinced the maths teacher of the University of Pavia, Giuseppe Ruggero Boscovich to plan the new Observatory.
For the building the south-east part of the Palace of Brera was chosen in order to avoid noises.
After the approval of the drawings and the wooden model by Count Firmian, by the Court of Vienna and by the Jesuits, work started and finished the following year (1765), thanks also to the contributions of the Jesuits and Boscovich. In 1772 Boscovich left the Observatory presumably due to divergences of opinion with the Order of Jesuits.

Egli diceva: “

Scientific Method and Philosophy of Science
(Sat Sep 29 23:26:27 2001) Philosophy of science these days seems largely concerned with questions of method, justification and reliability - what do scientists do (and are they all doing the same thing? are they doing what they think they're doing?), and does it work, and if so why, and what exactly does it produce? There are other issues, too, like, do scientific theories really tell us about the world, or just give us tools for making predictions (and is there a difference there?). The whole reductionism emergence squabble falls under this discipline, too. But (so far as an outsider can judge), method is where most of the debate is these days. Of course, most scientists proceed in serene indifference to debates in methodology, and indeed all other aspects of the philosophy of science. What Medawar wrote thirty years ago and more is still true today: If the purpose of scientific methodology is to prescribe or expound a system of enquiry or even a code of practice for scientific behavior, then scientists seem to be able to get on very well without it. Most scientists receive no tuition in scientific method, but those who have been instructed perform no better as scientists than those who have not. Of what other branch of learning can it be said that it gives its proficients no advantage; that it need not be taught or, if taught, need not be learned? (Actually

O njegovom boravku u Parizu pisao je i slavni francuski matematièar, astronom i geometar

    Physicists on the Money
Physicists have been honored by having their picture on currency in many countries around the world. Some are shown in small images below. Click on the colored text to view or down load a larger copy of the image. (The size of each image is shown in parentheses.) Abu Nasr Al-Farabi (870-950) appears on the 1 Tenge note from Kazakhstan. A scholar in many areas, including philosophy, linguistics, logic, and music. He also wrote about the nature of science and argued for the existence of the vacuum (empty space). For a brief bio click here . (26 K) Kristian Birkeland (1867-1917) appears on the Norwegian 200 Kroner note. Birkeland was a pioneer in studying the magnetic field of the earth and the aurora borealis. He made the suggestion that the aurora were caused by charges emitted by the sun being guided into the earth's atmosphere by the earth's magnetic field. An apparatus of his simulating this effect is shown on the bill at the left. For a brief bio click here . For a great site on the aurora

    Early theories
of the structure of matter were not based upon experiments. As scientists began to study the relationship between several physical phenomenon such as electricity, and magnetism they began to develop different models about atomic structure. Year Scientist(s) Discovery Greek
era Democritus "by convention bitter, by convention sweet, but in reality atoms and void" Ruggero Giuseppe Boscovich He published his atomic theory in the book "Philosophiae Naturalis Theoria redacta ad unicam legem virium in natura existentium". He held that bodies could not be composed of continuous matter, but of countless "point-like structures". Isaac Newton Proposed a mechanical universe with small solid masses in motion.

American anthropological theorist and formulator of the nomenclature now in standard use to categorize primitive societies as bands, tribes, chiefdoms, and states. Although widely accepted, the system was abandoned by Service himself because his subsequent research made him question the accuracy of the terminology. Service did fieldwork among the Havasupai of the Grand Canyon and in Paraguay and Mexico. His principal theoretical interests were in kinship, cultural evolution, theories of culture and the evolution of political institutions. His principal ethnographic contribution was Tobati: Paraguayan Town (1954), written with his wife Helen. Vincent du Vigneaud Born 18 May 1901; died 11 Dec 1978.
