Life History
Took B.Sc. examination (first rank) Took M.Sc examination (first rank) Started career as lecturer in Physics in Calcutta University. Joined Dacca University in as a reader in Physics where he wrote a short article of just six pages in English. It was an article relating to physics, on 'Max Planck's Law' and 'Light Quantum Hypothesis', which was sent to Albert Einstein. First visited Paris. He stayed there for a year. He conducted research in the Madame Curie Laboratory. Returned and became Dacca professor Appointed as Khaira Professor of Physics in Calcutta University He retired from Calcutta University in 1956. Was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, London. The Government of India named him a National Professor the following year. The President of India awarded him the honor of Padma Vibhushan. In his famous paper on the statistics of photons, Bose used Planck's Law of Radiation by proposing different states for the photon. Bose put particles into cells and talked about statistical independence of cells.

Dr. Satyendranath Bose (1884-1974) Dr. Satyendranath Bose was a legendary figure among the Indian scientists. Born on 01 January 1894 he had his education in the Presidency College, Calcutta. It was Sir J.C Bose who inspired him to devise scientific instrument from the materials available in the country. Plank Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis was published in 1924. Einstein translated the paper into German and elaborated it. In 1924 Dr.Bose went to Europe. In Paris he got permission from Madam Curie to work in her laboratory and took certain difficult measurements of the piezo-electric effect, a property exhibited by suitably shaped pieces of quartz under the influence of an alternating current field. During 1925-26, Dr. Bose worked with Einstein in Germany. After his return, he became Professor and Head of the Department of Physics at Dacca University. In 1948, he founded Bangiya Vigyan Parishad. He was Chairman of the National Institute of Science in India from 1948 to 1950. From 1956 to 1958, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Viswa-Bharati University. The Royal Society elected him a Fellow in 1958. That year he was also awarded Padma Vibhusan and made a National Professor.

Satyendranath Bose, Indian physicist
was a student of J. C. Bose in Calcutta, and clarified the relation between waves and particles by deriving the Planck distribution from the statistical mechanics of electromagnetic waves; Einstein saw in his work the reconciliation of the concepts of waves and particles, provided that the particles of light are indistinguishable, leading to a new idea in the statistics of particles, now called Bose-Einstein statistics. I met S. N. Bose in 1958, introduced to me by Abdus Salam; it must have been during the visit of Bose to London on the occasion of the election of Bose to the Royal Society; see the nice article Go to MY HOME PAGE for links to all my papers and books on mathematical physics and quantum field theory.

    Anderson, Carl
Temple University (1949), John Ericsson Medal of the American Society of Swedish Engineers (1960).

W hen countries seek to strengthen their mutual ties, they often turn towards science for providing suitable icons. This is understandable. Science is politically correct and culturally enhancing. Fortunately for India and Germany, they have in the persona of two great scientists, Satyendranath Bose and Albert Einstein, a hyphenated symbol of what is most sublime in international collaboration and mutual respect. S.N. Bose is probably the most romantic figure in the entire history of modern science in India. "It was given to S.N. Bose to make one important discovery and to write a paper of four pages about it." Like Eklavya in the Mahabharata, Bose adopted a guru in absentia, that is Einstein; but unlike Eklavya, Bose received from his "Revered Master" immediate recognition and support.
