    PHONE: (713) 527-6087 RICE TEAM OBSERVES LIMITED ATOMS IN BOSE-EINSTEIN HOUSTON, February 11, 1997 - Of the three teams in the world that can coax the elusive Bose-Einstein condensation into existence, only the Rice University team can make it using atoms that attract each other. This provides a unique situation for studying the interactions of the atoms in this rare state of matter. For this reason, the Rice team is taking an especially close look at the mechanics of how their condensate forms and the special properties it possesses. Their findings contribute to a basic understanding of interactions on the atomic level. A Bose-Einstein condensate, independently postulated by Indian physicist Satyendranath Bose and Albert Einstein in the 1920s, is a rare state of matter in which the atoms are so cold and move so slowly that they undergo a phase transition, as when water freezes to ice. But in this phase transition, the atoms condense into a special gas which behaves as a single unit. This occurs at fractions of a degree above absolute zero, or minus 460 degrees Fahrenheit. In the Feb. 10 issue of Physical Review Letters, the Rice team, led by Randall Hulet, professor of physics, reports that when the condensate is formed with attractive atoms, specifically lithium, there is a ceiling to the number of atoms before the condensate maxes out and collapses.

    THE CALCUTTA COLLOQUIUM
    Historically Kolkata has always had a very strong academic and scientific base. Many of the greats of Indian science have carried out their main work in the city : from Prafulla Chandra Roy and Jagadish Chandra Bose to Sir. C.V. Raman, Meghnad Saha and Satyendranath Bose. Great educationists like Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee and Prashanta Moholanobis and philanthropers like Mahendralal Sarkar brightened its academic landscape. Besides the two universities of Calcutta and Jadavpur, Kolkata also has several research institutes of renown : the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences, the Jagadish Bose Institute, the Indian Statistical Institute, the Institute of Chemical Biology and the Central Glass and Ceramics Research Instiute, to name a few. Central facilities like the Variable Energy Cyclotron and the Inter University Consortium of the UGC are thriving in the city.
    Despite this, it has been felt that there doesn't exist a forum in which the scientists working in these educational and research centres of excellence can come together for discussion and deliberation. "The Kolkata Kalan" is an attempt to provide such a forum and S.N. Bose National Centre, the youngest member of the group, will be its venue. On the first Friday of every month Kolkata scientists will meet and listen to and discuss with a renowned scientist from the city.

    En esta oportunidad los estadounidenses Eric A. Cornell y Carl E. Wieman, y el alemán Wolfgang Ketterle son los galardonados por la conquista del condensado Bose-Einstein, un estado de la materia a temperatura ultrabaja en el que los átomos se comportan de modo absolutamente idéntico, como un único superátomo, regidos por las leyes de la mecánica cuántica.

    Con il concetto di condensato di Bose-Einstein, insomma, si entra nel mondo dei paradossi che caratterizzano la meccanica quantistica. Ma con la sua concreta produzione, si avanza l'ipotesi che essa possa funzionare, sia pure a grandezze di qualche millimetro) anche su scala macroscopica. Malgrado decenni di ricerche teoriche e sperimentali, però, il fenomeno è rimasto una teoria per oltre settant'anni. Fino a che, grazie ai progressi della fisica atomica e ai conseguenti avanzamenti tecnologici, Cornell e Wieman sono riusciti per la prima volta a produrre il condensato a partire da atomi di rubidio raffreddati fino a temperature vicinissime allo zero assoluto, mentre Ketterle, indipendentemente dagli altri due, ha prodotto il condensato a partire da atomi di sodio. Il gruppo di Ketterle è riuscito persino a costruire una "fontana atomica", in cui una scia di gocce di condensato viene lasciata cadere sotto l'azione della forza di gravità. Enzo Iarocci, presidente dell'Istituto nazionale di Fisica nucleare, definisce questi risultati "esperimenti bellissimi, in cui sono riusciti a far comportare un piccolo sistema fatto di atomi che se fosse un fascio di luce laser", sottolineando inoltre che si tratta di un premio che valorizza una ricerca di base ed anche molto recente, in un settore d'avanguardia.
