metal; Simon, born 1808, who also signs his bows on the stick near the nut; John Dodd of Richmond, the greatest English bow-maker, who was especially renowned for his violoncello bows, though his violin bows had the defect of being rather short. The violoncello bow is a little shorter than those used for violin and viola, and the head and hut are deeper. The principal models of double-bass bows in vogue at the beginning of the 19th century were the Dragonetti, maintaining the arch of the medieval bows, and the Bottesini, shaped and held like the violin bow; the former was held over-hand with the hair inclining towards the bridge, and was adopted by the Paris Conservatoire under Habeneck about 1830; the great artist himself sent over the model from London. Illustrations of both bows are given by Vidal (op. cit. p1. Xviii.). A life of Bowditch was written by his son Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch (1805—1861), and was prefixed to the four’th volume (1839) of the translation of Laplace. In 1865 this was elaborated into a separate biography by another son, Henry Ingersoll Bowditch (1808—1892), a famous Boston physician. BOWDLER, THOMAS (1754—1825), editor of the “ family” Shakespeare, younger son of Thomas Bowdler, a gentleman of

Pride Of the Windjammer Fleet Climb aboard Captain Gib Philbrick's beloved Bowditch , a gaff- rigged, two-masted topsail schooner, 82 elegant feet on deck and 108 feet overall. Built of Maine timber in 1922 at East Boothbay, Maine, as a private racing yacht, she competed in the Bermuda races and won in 1927. Later, she was commissioned by the United States Navy as a coastal patrol boat, then saw service as a fishing vessel. Eventually rebuilt for the passenger trade, the Bowditch was purchased by Gib and his wife, Terry, in 1975. Today, the Bowditch's distinguished past belends with the best safety features and modern conveniences. Fully equipped with a powerful radio/telephone for ship-to-shore calling, she also carries radar units, Loran, and GPS. An inboard diesel engine provides power for docking and tight maneuvering. Rigorous annual inspections by the U.S. Coast Guard-and the Philbricks' devoted care-ensure top-notch condition. Life on Board Boarding Info Schedule Request Info ... Home

Bowditch, Nathaniel (26 Mar. 1773-16 Mar. 1838) , astronomer and mathematician, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Habakkuk Bowditch, a shipmaster and cooper, and Mary Ingersoll. His family moved to Danvers, Massachusetts, while he was still an infant but returned to Salem when Bowditch was seven. Business reverses forced his family into poverty, and Bowditch's formal education ended at age ten, when he entered his father's cooperage shop. In 1785 he became an apprentice clerk in the ship-chandlery shop of Hodges and Ropes in Salem; five years later he moved to the shop of Samuel C. Ward. Between January 1795 and December 1803, Bowditch made five voyages on merchant ships, including four to the East Indies and one to Europe, serving on the last voyage as master and part owner. In March 1798, between voyages, he married Elizabeth Boardman, who died seven months later. He married Mary Ingersoll, a cousin, in 1800; they had eight children. Bowditch began his self-education during his apprenticeship years. He began the study of algebra in 1787, calculus two years later, and Latin by 1790. He took up the latter two subjects in order to understand Isaac Newton's Principia . In June 1791 the resources of the Salem Philosophical Library were made available to him, including various science texts and the

Nautical science includes technical works on practical navigation, seamanship, naval architecture, and ship models. Most of my inventory in these fields consists of works contemporary with the days of sail. If you're interested in early navigating instruments and methods of navigation, ship building (or ship model building), rigging, sailmaking, or seamanship, you'll probably find something of interest. I also carry a stock of pilots and sailing directions for many of the waters of the world, as well books on lighthouses, lifesaving and lifeboats: directories, guides, and technical manuals. London: Printed by E. Owen; engraved by Paul Fourdrinier, 1750.
25.1 cm. Engraved title, [6], 191, [1 blank] pp. 330 marginal engravings, and 3 larger engravings in text. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked, some light marginal discoloration on the title and last leaf, migrated from the binding, but a fine, bright, attractive copy of this most decorative marine dictionary.

First Edition. The four-page list of subscribers includes many of England's naval notables. Truly a superb dictionary and an accomplished piece of bookmaking. The marginal engravings are all finely detailed, and are accurately aligned with the accompanying text. Craig pp. 12-13. McDonald 247. Where Would We Be Without Bowditch?
For centuries, ship navigation was largely guesswork
    until a mathematician provided direction.

    by Daniel Finamore
O N CHRISTMAS eve 1803, the news that Nathaniel Bowditch had returned to Salem, Massachusetts, spread rapidly through the town, and all who heard it expressed disbelief. With Bowditch as her master, the ship Putnam had departed 13 months prior on a voyage to Sumatra and Mauritius, and her return, with a pungent cargo of pepper and coffee, had been due any day. His appearance could mean only one of two things: Either Bowditch had wrecked his ship, the Putnam, and had arrived home by a land route, or despite the thick blanket of fog, he had somehow navigated the rockbound coast and brought the Putnam safely into Salem harbor. The more experienced mariners in town would have held offshore and waited for the fog to clear, for several days if necessary. But Bowditch was no ordinary navigator.
