Share A Sailing Experience Steeped in America's Maritime History... Nathaniel Bowditch was born in Salem, Massachusetts, 1773, during the great era of sailing vessels. At a very early age, he showed an understanding of math, astronomy, and navigation far beyond his peers ... even those who had been sailing for years. By the time he was 20, Nathaniel had learned 4 different languages so that he could even further pursue his education. He was recognized as the world's most renowned mathematician at that time. On his first overseas voyage, he took what had been the standard navigational practice (which consisted primarily of "dead reckoning") and added to it a degree of accuracy and cohesion that revolutionized marine navigation through to the present day. Experience Again the Era of Sailing Ships Enjoy relaxed three-hour cruises under sail aboard the 54' traditionally rigged steel schooner "Nathaniel Bowditch" exploring the realm of dolphins and wild sea creatures. Private charters available for weddings, parties, anniversaries, reunions and business outings.

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham ISBN: 0395068819 (hardcover)
ISBN: 0395137136 (softcover) We read this book aloud last year. It's a good bookone that I think many homeschoolers would like. We meet Nathaniel Bowditch when he's just 6 years old right before his family was moving back to Salem, Massachusetts. We follow his life through his early years at school, his 9-year indenture to a shipping supplier which started at the age of 12, his trips to the Mediterranean and the Philippines, and his marriage. So much happened to Nathaniel Bowditch. Much of the events are true, but this is a "fictionalized" biography. One thing I like about this book is that it gave us a good excuse to study geography a little. We folowed Nathaniel's trips in our atlas and on our maps. We do this with many books that we read; it's an easy way to learn geography. One thing we love is our little laser pointer. With the laser pointer, we can stay seated on the couch and still point to the locations on the map. (Yes, we have a map in the living room. We even have a timeline or two in the dining room. I really think that having a picture of the world up in view all the time really helps kids to have a good picture of the world in their mind when they're older.) The reason that I think that this is a great homeschooling readaloud is that Nathaniel Bowditch took responsibility for his own education. He had to leave school at the age of 12 to fulfill his indenture. That effectively ended his formal education, though he still dreamed of attending Harvard. He learned about navigation from a gentleman named Sam. He then went on to learn surveying and mathematics. Authoring an almanac followed that! Around the time he turned 16, he was lent Sir Isaac Newton's

The Bowditch Initiative team is moving ahead
By Meg Twohey and Nate Bowditch For over a year and a half, Historic Salem has been working with other Salem cultural institutions Salem State College Peabody Essex Museum House of the Seven Gables and National Park Service and with Salem citizen volunteers, educators, historians, math, science and computer professionals. The result is the Bowditch Initiative, which will tell the story of Nathaniel Bowditch and his extraordinary achievements as navigator, ship's master, teacher and scientist to the people of Salem, the North Shore and New England. The project consists of three elements:
Nathaniel Bowditch Implementation of an education and interpretation program that will bring Bowditch the man, along with marine science, math and history, to both the general public and our schools. The plan includes interpretive programs for the public and education programs for schools, college students and educators. A Bowditch walking tour and guidebook will be unveiled this fall. A Web site is already on the Internet to bring together everything we do. It is www. nathaniel bowditch.org

On our frequent day trips to Destin I would wistfully watch as the tall sailing ships loaded with waving tourists glided into the harbor. I have been promising myself for years that one day I would take a sail on one of those ships. Sometimes when you look forward to something and have high expectations, the actual experience can be a letdown. This one wasn't. One of three tall sailing ships that offer dolphin, shelling and sunset cruises in Destin, the Nathaniel Bowditch could be the most unusual of the trio. This past weekend I finally had a chance to sail on a morning

NEASA
Nathaniel Bowditch and the Art and Science of Navigation, 1802-2002 A Conference Held at Salem State College 8-9 November 2002 The Bowditch Institute of Salem will celebrate the bicentennial of Nathaniel Bowditch's The New American Practical Navigator with a conference on the topic, "Nathaniel Bowditch: The Art and Science of Navigation, 1802-2002" to be held at Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts, November 8-10, 2002. The conference will use Bowditch as a touchstone for exploring the state of the maritime sciences and commerce of his age, as well as the legacy of his contributions into the 21st century. Befitting the broad range of Bowditch's activities-five commercial voyages to the East, advancement of celestial navigation and maritime cartography, contributions to the development of insurance and civic institutions-this interdisciplinary conference will address a broad range of aspects of the navigator's work and legacy. Bowditch scholars and navigation specialists from eminent research universities, as well as scholars from the U. S. Naval Observatory and Sea Education Association will explore interconnections between maritime history, science, and commerce in the Early Republic, and Bowditch's legacy in these areas today. And, in the spirit of Bowditch's commitment to education, we warmly invite participation by scholars, teachers, museum and historic site professionals, and the interested public. The conference will take place in historic Salem seaport, and will feature venues at the home of Nathaniel Bowditch (under restoration), the Peabody Essex Museum, the Salem Athenaeum, the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, and Salem State College. Attendant activities will include museum and historic site visits, including tours of the replica 1797 merchant vessel Friendship.

During the last two centuries over 75 editions, almost 1,000,000 copies, of Bowditch have been published by the US Government. It has lived because it has combined the best technologies of each generation of navigator.
