The founder of modern chemistry, he headed the movement that turned it from an occult science into a subject well-grounded in experiment, sound methodology and observation. His pioneering experiments on the properties of gases and his mechanistic theory of matter are the forerunners of the modern theories of chemical elements and atomic theory. He is best known for founding the renowned Boyle Lectures and for Boyle's Law that states that the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional. A founding fellow of the Royal Society, three consecutive kings of England conversed familiarly with him. Philosophically, he wrote with sophistication on atheism, atomism, epistemology, miracles and natural laws. He influenced Berkeley, Spinoza, Henry More and especially John Locke, who relied on Boyle's theory of primary and secondary qualities in his

BOYLE, ROBERT (1627 - 1691). . London, 1680. Second edition of Boyle's masterpiece of scientific literature (of the first edition fewer than 35 copies are known). It is difficult to realize how confused and confusing chemical reactions appeared in Boyle's day. In the form of a dialog, the Sceptical Chymist presented Boyle's hypothesis that matter consisted of atoms and clusters of atoms in motion and that every phenomenon was the result of collisions of particles in motion. He appealed to chemists to experiment and asserted that experiments denied the limiting of elements to only the classic four: earth, fire, air, and water. He also pleaded that chemistry cease being subservient to medicine or to alchemy, but rise to the status of a science. For these reasons, Boyle has been called the founder of modern chemistry. The Sceptical Chymist is written in a good, though rather prolix, style, enlivened with touches of humor, as when the alchemists are compared with "the Navigators of Solomon's Tarshish Fleet, who brought home . . . not only Gold, and Silver, and Ivory, but Apes and Peacocks too", since their theories "either like Peacock's feathers make a great shew, but are neither solid nor useful; or else, like Apes, if they have some appearance of being rational, are blemish'd with some absurdity or other which makes them appear ridiculous." The chief value of the

B oyle, Robert
b. Jan. 25, 1627, Lismore, County Waterford, Ire.
d. Dec. 30, 1691, London, Eng.
Anglo-Irish chemist and natural philosopher noted for his pioneering experiments on the properties of gases and his espousal of a corpuscular view of matter that was a forerunner of the modern theory of chemical elements. He was a founding member of the Royal Society of London.
Boyle was the 14th child of a family of wealth and influence. In 1635 he was sent to Eton College, after which he spent the years from 1639 to 1644 with a tutor on the European continent, for the most part in Switzerland.
From 1645 to 1655 Boyle lived partly in Dorset, where he began his experimental work and wrote moral essays, some of which appeared in 1655 in Occasional Reflections upon Several Subjects. One of his essays is reputed to have inspired the writing of Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. He spent some time in Ireland in connection with his estates; because laboratory apparatus was unobtainable there, he engaged in anatomical dissection.
Beginning in 1668, he resided with his sister Katherine, Lady Ranelagh, in London. In this final period of his life he continued his experimental work with the help of laboratory assistants. Boyle also continued to take interest in the Royal Society and in his charitable activities. By his will he endowed a series of Boyle lectures, or sermons, which still continue, "for proving the Christian Religion against notorious Infidels."

Robert Boyle (1627-1691) Boyle, a chemist and physicist, was born in Lismore Castle, Munster, Ireland, in January 25th 1627, and died, in London, in December 30th 1691. Boyle is sometimes considered the "father of modern Chemistry". In the winter of 1641, he went to Florence where carefully studied the works of Galileu, leading him to a mecanicist philosophy. He was one of the first researchers to have a scientific approach to the atomism of the Ancient Greeks, as an opposition to the four element theory of Aristotle and the Paracelsus theories. His book The Sceptical Chemist opened a new era in the history of Chemistry, where terms like atom or molecule appeared. Boyle is often considered the founder of chemical analysis due to his studies of materials composition. His skeptical attitude was not enough to avoid some passionate work in alchemy. Boyle also made important work in hydrostatics, sound and breathing phenomena, being responsible, along with Hooke, for the construction of the pneumatic machine performing various gas pressure experiences. He also verified the inverse relationship between pressure and volume at constant temperature (Law of Boyle-Mariotte).

Boyle is often referred to as the father of modern chemistry; he separated chemistry from alchemy and gave the first precise definitions of a chemical element, a chemical reaction, and chemical analysis. He also made studies of the calcination of metals, combustion, acids and bases, the nature of colors, and the propagation of sound. Although he was especially noted for his experimental work, Boyle also contributed to physical theory, supporting an early form of the atomic theory of matter, which he called the corpuscular philosophy, and using it to explain many of his experimental results. His extensive writings contributed greatly to the dominance of the mechanistic theory following Newton's work. Boyle was one of the group at Oxford that later became the Royal Society, but he refused the presidency of the society in 1680, as well as many other honors. Boyle, Richard, 1st earl of Cork

Robert Boyle Dates:
Born: January 25, 1627
Died: December 31, 1691 Biography: Robert Boyle was an English chemist who was responsible for the final separation between modern chemistry and medieval alchemy. According to Boyle, chemistry is best done by relying upon repeated experimental evidence rather than the traditional assumption that all matter is composed of some mystical, common elements. As a result of his methodology, he discovered the fundamental relationship between temperature, pressure and volume in gases. Boyle was a founder of the Royal Society, which took as its motto Nullius in Verba , a Latin phrase which means "nothing by mere authority."
