Boyle, Robert
Irish chemist and physicist who published the seminal The Sceptical Chymist 1661. He formulated Boyle's law 1662. He was a pioneer in the use of experiment and scientific method.
Boyle questioned the alchemical basis of the chemical theory of his day and taught that the proper object of chemistry was to determine the compositions of substances. The term 'analysis' was coined by Boyle and many of the reactions still used in qualitative work were known to him. He introduced certain plant extracts, notably litmus, for the indication of acids and bases. He was also the first chemist to collect a sample of gas.
Boyle was born in Lismore, County Waterford. He lived in Oxford, England, 1654-68, and subsequently in London. As a student he joined a group whose aim was to cultivate the 'new philosophy'; this became the Royal Society 1662.
He learned Hebrew, Greek, and Syriac to further his studies of the Bible, and endowed the Boyle Lectures for the defence of Christianity.
Boyle pointed out that bodies alter in weight according to the varying buoyancy of the atmosphere. These findings were published in The Spring of Air 1660.

Boyle's Law
Discovered by Robert Boyle in 1662. On the continent of Europe, this law is attributed to Edme Mariotte, therefore those counties tend to call this law by his name. Mariotte, however, did not publish his work until 1676. This link takes you to a discussion of the experiment Boyle performed, the data he gathered and his picture. His law gives the relationship between pressure and volume if temperature and amount are held constant. If the volume of a container is increased, the pressure decreases. If the volume of a container is decreased, the pressure increases. Why? Suppose the volume is increased. This means gas molecules have farther to go and they will impact the container walls less often per unit time. This means the gas pressure will be less because there are less molecule impacts per unit time. If the volume is decreased, the gas molecules have a shorter distance to go, thus striking the walls more often per unit time. This results in pressure being increased because there are more molecule impacts per unit time. The mathematical form of Boyle's Law is: PV = k This means that the pressure-volume product will always be the same value if the temperature and amount remain constant. This relationship was what Boyle discovered.

of the regent Murray. He enjoyed a high ~nd influential position un.der the regent James Douglas, earl of Morton, but was banished in 1583 for his share in the seizure of King James VI., a plot known as the Raid of Ruthven. He retired to France, but was soon allowed to return to Scotland. He died on the 3rd of January 1590. William, 8th or 9th Lord Boyd (d. 1692), was created earl of Kilmarnock in 1661, and this nobleman’s grandson William, the 3rd earl (d. 1717), was a partisan of the Hanoverian kings and fought for George I. during the rising of 1715. His son William, the 4th earl (1704—1746), was educated in the same principles, but in 1745, owing either to a personal affront or to the influence of his wife or to his straitened circumstances, he deserted George II. and joined Charles Edward, the Young Pretender. The 4th earl fought at Falkirk and Culloden., where he was made prisoner, and was beheaded on the 18th of August 1746. The title of earl of Kilmarnock is now merged in that of earl of Erroll. the Institute. He died in Paris on the 23rd of November 1833. Perhaps no French surgeon of his time thought or wrote with greater clearness and good sense than Boyer; and while his natural modesty made him distrustful of innovation, and somewhat tenacious of established modes of treatment, he was as judicious in his diagnosis and as cool and skilful in manipulating, as he was cautiOus in forming his judgment on individual cases. His two great works are :—Traité complet de l’anatomie (in 4 vols., 1797—1799), of which a fourth edition appeared in 1815, and Traité des maladies chirurgicales et des operations qui leur conviennent (in II vols., 1814—1826), of which a new edition in 7 vols. was published in 1844—1853, with additions by his son, Philippe Boyer (1801—1858).

Boyle, Robert 1627-91, Anglo-Irish physicist and chemist. The seventh son of the 1st earl of Cork, he was educated at Eton and on the Continent and conducted most of his researches at his own laboratories at Oxford (1654-68) and London (1668-91). He invented a vacuum pump and used it in the discovery (1662) of what is now known as Boyle's law (see gas laws ). Boyle is often referred to as the father of modern chemistry; he separated chemistry from alchemy and gave the first precise definitions of a chemical element, a chemical reaction, and chemical analysis. He also made studies of the calcination of metals, combustion, acids and bases, the nature of colors, and the propagation of sound. Although he was especially noted for his experimental work, Boyle also contributed to physical theory, supporting an early form of the atomic theory of matter, which he called the corpuscular philosophy, and using it to explain many of his experimental results. His extensive writings contributed greatly to the dominance of the mechanistic theory following Newton's work. Boyle was one of the group at Oxford that later became the Royal Society, but he refused the presidency of the society in 1680, as well as many other honors. See his works, ed. by Thomas Birch (6 vol., 1772; repr. 1965-66); biography by R. E. W. Maddison (1969); study by Marie Boas Hall (1958, repr. 1968).
