Tycho Brahe: The Heavens and His Scientific Achievements
General Information: Tycho Brahe was born on December 14, 1546 in Knudstrup in Scania, Denmark (today, the town Knudstrup is in southern Sweden). He was the eldest son of Otto Brahe and Beatte Bille, both from families of a noble Danish family. At a young age, Tycho was kidnapped by his uncle, Joergen Brahe, who was childless, and Tycho end up being raise in his uncle's castle in Tostrup, Scania. At the age of seven, his uncle insisted that Tycho studied Latin, so that he can be a lawyer. However, his parents objected. When he was thirteen, Tycho studied law and philosophy at the University of Copenhagen from 1559 to 1562. On August 21, 1560, an important natural events turned Tycho from law to astronomy. A partial eclipse of the sun took place as predicted. He bought a copy of Ptolemy's Almagest a large wooden quadrant that graduated in sixtieths of a degree, part of a circle with a nineteen foot radius, to get lines of sight on stars. It was his first accurate observations. In 1566, he attended University of Wittenberg, Germany, and Tycho lost his temper in a quarrel with another student over who was the better mathematician, which ended in a duel where Tycho's nose was cut off, and it was replaced by a gold and silver alloy. Between 1565 and 1570, he traveled to Europe to study at Wittenberg, Rostock, Basel, and Augsburg. Tycho Brahe married to a peasant woman by the name of Kirstin Jvrgensdatte from Kegervd in Skene. They were never married in church. They had three sons and five daughters. However, under Danish custom, they were all considered to be illegitimate because she was not a noble family. Tycho had a brother by the name of Steen, who became a nobleman and a member of the Danish riksred. He also have a sister by the name of Sofie, who studied alchemy, astrology, and medicine on the island of Hven. In 1588, King Frederick II of Denmark died and his son Christian IV became king.

Oct. 24, 1601, Prague), Danish astronomer whose work in developing astronomical instruments and in measuring and fixing the positions of stars paved the way for future discoveries. His observationsthe most accurate possible before the invention of the telescopeincluded a comprehensive study of the solar system and accurate positions of more than 777 fixed stars.
    Youth and education
Several important natural events turned Tycho from law to astronomy. The first was the total eclipse of the Sun predicted for Aug. 21, 1560. Such a prediction seemed audacious and marvellous to a 14-year-old student, but when Tycho witnessed its realization he saw and believedthe spark was litand, as his many later references testify, he never forgot the event. His subsequent student life was divided between his daytime lectures on jurisprudence, in response to the wishes of his uncle, and his nighttime vigil of the stars. The professor of mathematics helped him with the only printed astronomical book available, the Almagest of Ptolemy, the astronomer of antiquity who described the geocentric conception of the cosmos. Other teachers helped him to construct small globes, on which star positions could be plotted, and compasses and cross-staffs, with which he could estimate the angular separation of stars.

Brahe, Tycho , Danish astronomer. The most prominent astronomer of the late 16th cent., he paved the way for future discoveries by improving instruments and by his precision in fixing the positions of planets and stars. From Brahe's exact observations of the planets, Kepler devised his laws of planetary motions (see Kepler's laws ). Brahe's achievements included the study of a supernova (first observed in 1572 and now known as Tycho's supernova) in the constellation Cassiopeia and the discoveries of a variation in the inclination of the lunar orbit and of the fourth inequality of the moon's motion. He never fully accepted the Copernican system but made a compromise between it and the Ptolemaic system. In the Tychonic system, the earth was the immobile body around which the sun revolved, and the five planets then known revolved around the sun. Given funds by the Danish king Frederick II, Brahe built on the island of Ven a castle, Uranienborg, and an observatory, Stjarneborg. He was deprived of his revenues by Christian IV in 1596 and left Ven (1597); in 1599 he settled near Prague under the patronage of the German emperor Rudolf II. He published (1588) De mundi aetherii recentioribus phaenomenis

Tycho Brahes Glada Vänner Explanation: Tycho Brahe was the most meticulous astronomical observer of his time. Brahe , who lived between 1546 and 1601, set out to solve the day's most pressing astronomical problem: to determine whether the Earth or the Sun was at the center of the Solar System . To do this he and his assistants created the first major astronomical observatory where they devised and used the most accurate pre-telescopic astronomical instuments. Tycho Brahe thus compiled tables of precise measurements of the positions and brightnesses of planets and stars. Brahe never solved the Solar System problem himself - but left data so impressively accurate his assistant Johannes Kepler was able to develop definitive laws. Brahe is also remembered for witnessing a supernova in 1572, showing that the Great Comet of 1577 was not an atmospheric phenomena, and for his

His second debut was made in 1794 at the Bath concerts, to the conductor of which, Rauzzini, he was indebted for careful training extending over a period of more than two years. In 1796 he reappeared in London at Drury Lane in Storace’s opera of Ma/imoud. Such was his success that 1680, at his castle at Visingsborg, where during his lifetime ho had held more than regal pomp. His brother, NILS BRAHE (1604—1632), also served with distinction under Gustavus Adoiphus. He took part in the siege and capture of Riga in 1621, served with distinction in Poland (1626—1627) and assisted in the defence of Stralsund in 1628. In 1630 he accompanied Gustavus into Germany, and in 1631 was appointed colonel of “the yellow regiment,” the king’s world-renowned life-guards, at the head of which he captured the castle of Wurzhurg on the 8th of October 1631. He took part in the long duel between Gustavus and Wallenstein round Nuremberg as general of infantry, and commanded the left wing at Lutzen (November 6, 1632), where he was the only Swedish general officer present. At the very beginning of the fight he was mortally wounded. The king regarded Brahe as the best general in the Swedish army after Lennart Torstensen. A direct descendant of Nils, MAGNUS BRAHE (1790—1844), fought in the campaign of 1813—14, under the cro*n prince Bernadotte, with whom, after his accession to the throne as Charles XIV., lie was in. high favour. He became marshal of the kingdom, and, especially from 1828 onwards, exercised a preponderant influence in public affairs.
