Alfred Brauer 's father was Max Brauer who was a well-off businessman in the wholesale leather trade. Max Brauer's wife was Lilly Caroline and Alfred was the oldest of their three children. He had an younger, and more famous, brother Richard Brauer , who also has a biography in this archive. Alfred Brauer was seven years older than Richard and of an age between the two brothers was Alfred's sister Alice. The Brauers were a Jewish family and they would live through a period in German history when to be non-Ayran brought great hardships and suffering. World War I was a difficult time for Alfred Brauer and had he not had a great determination he would never have overcome the almost impossible odds against him making a career in mathematics. He was 20 years of age at the outbreak of the war and he served for four years in the German army. He was seriously wounded during the war and effectively lost seven years at what is for most mathematicians the most crucial time in their development. Brauer was back studying at the University of Berlin after World War I. In 1920 he attended

    SERVICES
    Photocopying
The Library has two photocopiers for public use. One is located in the Level One Journal Stacks, and the second is located in the Level Three stacks. Both photocopiers accept UNC OneCards and Guest Photocopy Cards, and the Level One machine also accepts dollar bills and change (quarters, dimes and nickels). Guest Photocopy Cards are available for purchase at Davis Library. Patrons may add money to their UNC OneCard at Tarheel Tellers located in Carroll Hall, Davis Library, Hanes Art Center, and the Chemistry Library (269 Venable Hall). Copies cost 8 cents each using a UNC OneCard and 15 cents each using cash.
Internet and Online Catalog Stations These stations may be used recreationally to check your e-mail or surf the web. However, in the event of heavy demand, patrons should limit their use of the stations to 30 minutes. Use of the stations will be given the following priorities:
    (1) Patrons accessing the online catalog.
    (2) Patrons requiring use of the machines for academic purposes.

He had an older brother Alfred Brauer , who also became a famous mathematician and has a biography in this archive. Alfred Brauer was seven years older than Richard and of an age between the two brothers was Richard's sister Alice. Richard entered the Kaiser-Freidrich-Schule in Charlottenburg in 1907. Charlottenburg was a district of Berlin which was not incorporated into the city until 1920. Richard studied at this school until 1918 and it was during his school years that he developed his love of mathematics and science. However, this was not due to the teaching at the school, but it came about through the influence of his brother Alfred. In [4] Richard writes about his school teachers who he describes as not being very competent. There was one exception however, and it was fortunate that this good teacher was a mathematician who had a doctorate awarded for research done under Frobenius 's supervision.
