Wer sind diese Brauer?
Mittlerweile allesamt Ingenieure.

International Conference Richard Brauer (1901-1977):
Taking his ideas into the 21st century University of Stuttgart, Germany
March 22-24, 2001
Richard Brauer was born in Berlin, Germany, on February 10 in 1901. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of this event, an international conference will be held. The aim of the conference is to bring together experts from the different areas to which R. Brauer made significant contributions, to report on developments initiated by his work and his questions, to describe the present state of knowledge in various areas of algebra and number theory and to outline major challenges for future research. All lectures are intended as survey talks and should be accessible to a broad audience. Main speakers: J. Alperin (Chicago) R. Bautista (Mexico City)

The Brauers were a Jewish family and they would live through a period in German history when to be non-Ayran brought great hardships and suffering. World War I was a difficult time for Alfred Brauer and had he not had a great determination he would never have overcome the almost impossible odds against him making a career in mathematics. He was 20 years of age at the outbreak of the war and he served for four years in the German army. He was seriously wounded during the war and effectively lost seven years at what is for most mathematicians the most crucial time in their development. Brauer was back studying at the University of Berlin after World War I. In 1920 he attended

By J. A. Green
RICHARD DAGOBERT BRAUER, Emeritus Professor at Harvard University and one of the foremost algebraists of this century, died on April 17, 1977, in Boston, Massachusetts. He had been an Honorary Member of the Society since 1963. Richard Brauer was born on February 10, 1901, in Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany; he was the youngest of three children of Max Brauer and his wife Lilly Caroline. Max Brauer was an influential and wealthy businessman in the wholesale leather trade, and Richard was brought up in an affluent and cultured home with his brother Alfred and his sister Alice. Richard Brauer's early years were happy and untroubled. He attended the Kaiser-Friedrich-Schule in Charlottenburg from 1907 until he graduated from there in 1918. He was already interested in science and mathematics as a young boy, an interest which owed much much to the influence of his gifted brother Alfred, who was seven years older than Richard. summa cum laude on March 16, 1926.
