History of meteorology
at the Pic du Midi Observatory
The observatory at Sencours Pass
A temporary meteorological station was established at the Sencours Pass, at an altitude of 2366 meters, just below the summit of Pic du Midi, in 1873. The observers lodged at the inn that had been built a few years earlier, and the instruments were placed on the Plantade knoll, named for an astronomer who had died there in 1741. Measuring instruments were also placed at the summit of the Pic du Midi. General de Nansouty, observer Baylac and a cook spent six winters at the pass, every day of which they took four series of 6 to 10 meteorological readings at the Plantade knoll, at 7 and 10 a.m., and 4 and 7 p.m. Once a day, observer Baylac would climb to the summit of the Pic to take a reading at 12:43 noon (7 a.m. in Washington), and the results were transmitted to General Albert Myers, Chief of the U.S. Signal and Meteorological Service, following the recommendations of the Congress of Vienna. By 1880, the observers could stay in the permanent buildings at the summit of the Pic du Midi. The Observatory was officially inaugurated in 1882, and donated to the State at this date, on condition that the State would take over the 45,000 franc debt, and that it would give 30,000 francs a year for the observers' salaries and to maintain the building. Vaussenat was named director.
The organization of the Observatory
The Pic du Midi Observatory's exceptional location at an altitude of 2880 meters was not without constraints, and the whole story has to be known in order to understand its history until 1952, when the Observatory was linked to the rest of the world by two cable-cars, drastically changing life at the summit.

Introduction
At the end of the 19th century, a number of discoveries were made in physics which paved the way for the breakthrough of modern physics and led to the revolutionary technical development that is continually changing our daily lives.
Around 1886, Heinrich Hertz demonstrated experimentally the existence of radio waves. It is said that Hertz only smiled incredulously when anyone predicted that his waves would one day be sent round the earth. Hertz died in 1894 at the early age of 37. In September 1895, Guglielmo Marconi sent the first radio signal over a distance of 1.5 km. In 1901 he spanned the Atlantic. Hertz did not live long enough to experience the far-reaching positive effects of his great discovery, nor of course did he have to see it abused in bad television programs. It is hard to predict the consequences of new discoveries in physics.

Structure of (Liquid) Aqueous Solutions of Metallic Cations and Structure and Dynamics of Molecular Liquid by different Experimental Techniques
M.Isabel Cabaço works on the study of the structure of the (liquid) aqueous solutions of salts of metallic cations by X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, in the group of Atomic and Molecular Physics of the CFMCUL. She collaborates regularly since 1991 with the group of Molecular Dynamics, Laboratoire de Physico-Chimie Moléculaire (LPCM), Université de Bordeaux I, France, in projects which concern the study of structure and dynamics of molecular liquids, pure and in binary mixtures by using scattering (neutron) and spectroscopies (Raman and Far Infrared). She has been responsible for the experimental projects (neutron diffraction) performed at Laboratoire Léon Brillouin, CEA-CNRS, Saclay, France, that have allowed to follow the evolution of the local order, translational and orientational, upon the temperature and the concentration. She teaches Experimental Physics (basics) in the Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisboa, Portugal).
