John Britton entered Beverley Grammar School in 1939 and he completed his school education in 1946, entering the University College of Hull in that year. He was extremely lucky to be taught by two outstanding group theorists at Hull, namely Bernhard Neumann and Hanna Neumann . Britton graduated from Hull in 1950, although at that time Hull could not award its own degrees and so Britton graduated with an external University of London degree. Bernhard Neumann left Hull to take up a post in Manchester in 1948, but the Neumann's spent the summer of 1950 in Hull and organised an algebra seminar at their house. Britton took part in that seminar which served as his introduction to research in algebra. Britton then proceeded to study for a Master's degree at Hull, supervised by Hanna Neumann . This degree, again an external London degree, was awarded in 1951.

Ven. John Britton
(Or Bretton). A layman and martyr, of all ancient family of Bretton near Barnsley in Yorkshire. An ardent Catholic, he was often separated from his wife and family, owing to constant persecution which he suffered for his faith. When advanced in years, he was maliciously and falsely accused of traitorous speeches against the queen and condemned to death. Refusing to renounce his faith he was executed at York, as in cases of high treason, 1 April, 1598. He was probably the father of Dr. Matthew Britton, prefect and professor at Douai in 1599. net “). She was the patroness of hunters, fishermen and sailors, and also a goddess of birth and health. The centre of her worship was Cydonia, whence it extended, to Sparta and Aegina (where she, was ‘known as Aphaea) and the islands of the Mediterranean. By some she is considered to have been a moon-goddess, her flight from Minos and her leap into the sea signifying the revolution and disappearance of the moon (Pausanias ~i. 30, iii. 14; Antoninus Liberalis 40). The name La Brittone was given by the Norman settlers of the 12th century to its ferry across the estuary of the Neath (where Archbishop Baldwin and Giraldus crossed in 1188, and which is still used), but the Welsh name of the town from at least the 16th century has been Llansawel. The Breton.s are by nature conservative. They cling with almost equal attachment to their local customs and their religious superstitions. It was not till the 17th century that paganism was even nominally abolished in some parts, and there is probably no district in Europe where the popular Christianity has assimilated more from earlier creeds. Witchcraft and the influence of fairies are still often believed in. The costume of both sexes is very peculiar both in cut and colour, but varies considerably in different districts. Bright red, violet and blue are much used, not on.ly by the women, but in the coats and waistcoats of the men. The reader will find full illustrations of the different styles in Bouet’s Breiz-izel, ou vie des Breions de l’Armorique (1844).

    Second Generation
David BRITTON John ) was born in Weeley, 1837. He married Emma BARTON in Weeley, 2/2/1861. Emma was born in Tendring 22/3/1842. Record number: 388 Emma was the daughter of Jeremiah BARTON and Charlotte HUNT. Emma died 25/2/1932 in Plough Rd, Gt Bentley, at 89 years of age. She was christened in Lt Bentley, 18/9/1842. Parish records show that Emma was baptised on 18/09/1842 at Little Bentley, she was born in Tendring, and was the daughter of Charlotte Barton (nee Hunt). Also baptised on 18/09/1842 at Little Bentley was Mary Ann Hunt, daughter of Isaac and Mary Hunt. I presume that Isaac was Charlotte's brother and they chose to have their children baptised together. Emma and her second husband Thomas were cousins - their fathers were Jeremiah and Samuel. The two families were neighbours according to the 1841 census. Emma was born the next year, so may have lived next to her cousin for the first years of her life. Emma's baptism record shows her birth date as 22/03/1842 which would mean she was 39 in 1881 but she gives her age for the census as 37. Also she would have been 49 in 1891 but she gives her age for the census as 47. Emma's photograph appeared in a local newspaper with the following text: Gt Bentley. Active in her ninetieth year. Mrs Britton, aged 89, of Plough Road, Gt Bentley, drawing water at the well. From a photograph by Mr J Lodge. (Taken Sep 1931.)

Britton, John 1771-1857, English antiquary and topographer. The long list of his writings includes biographies, critical works on art and literature, and the descriptions of landscapes and buildings for which he is famous. The Beauties of Wiltshire (3 vol., 1801-25) was written with E. W. Brayley. The two friends wrote part of Beauties of England and Wales (18 vol., in 25, 1801-15), but because of difficulties with the publishers, they did not complete the series. Britton was influential in the movement to preserve ancient monuments. See his autobiography (3 parts, 1849-50).
