http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/7854/transf6.html
DAVID BEN-GURION (continued) Ben-Gurion's Plan to Transfer Arabs to Iraq
Towards the end of 1938, Ben-Gurion began to work out details of a plan to transfer Arabs from Palestine to Iraq.
In a diary entry dated 10 December 1938 - during the period when preparations were in hand for the St. James's Palace [London] Conference - Ben-Gurion wrote that the Jews would come to this conference with maximalistic claims. They would suggest that the Feisal-Weizmann agreement of 1919 should serve as a basis for negotiation and would stand by their demand that at least all of Western Palestine be handed over to the Jews.
Ben-Gurion then continued, "We will offer to Iraq ten million pounds to transfer one hundred thousand Arab families from Palestine to Iraq. Were it not for Ibn-Saud and Egypt, there would perhaps be a chance for this proposal. However, whether or not there is a chance, we should approach them with this extensive plan."(94)
On the following day, Ben-Gurion put forward this plan at a meeting of the Jewish Agency Executive. He said that he did not know whether Iraq would be prepared to accept it "but if it were just Iraq, perhaps they would listen to us. Iraq needs a much larger Arab colonisation and obviously they would not loathe the millions [of pounds]." The problem, as Ben-Gurion saw it, was the presence of Ibn-Saud and Egypt at the forthcoming London Conference. A miracle would be required to come to an agreement with the Arabs.(95)
Nearly two weeks later, in a letter to Eliezer Kaplan, BenGurion wrote that on the previous day, a meeting of the Advisory Council of the Jewish Agency had taken place and before his (Ben-Gurion's) arrival, the non-Zionists had agreed that the Jews demand Palestine for themselves and also "they agreed to the proposal that Iraq be given ten million (pounds sterling) on condition they they receive one hundred thousand Arab families from Palestine."(96)

Archives

Parkes Library
... Contact Details The Jewish Archives
The archive contains a wealth of material of interest to the historian of Anglo-Jewry as well as James Parkes's personal papers. In recent years, the Parkes Collections have developed as a place of deposit for archives concerning nineteenth and twentieth century Anglo-Jewry. Of particular interest are materials relating to national and international organisations and to Jewish individuals. These include the papers of Anglo-Jewish leaders, such as Selig Brodetsky, Neville Laski and Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz, and those of some of its most important institutions: the Anglo-Jewish Association, the Board of Guardians for the Relief of the Jewish Poor and the London Board of Shechita. Five hundred boxes contain the records of American prosecutors of Nazi war criminals, the subsequent proceedings at the Nuremberg Trials and documentation of the British anti-fascist organisation, Searchlight. The James Parkes papers incorporate correspondence and working papers for publications, broadcasts, sermons, articles and reviews, correspondence, photographs and papers concerning the administration of the Parkes Library. Special subject areas include fascism in the East End of London 1936-1937, refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe 1938-1939, plans for a Jewish-Christian group 1940 and the Second Vatican Council 1960-1963.

Post-Doctoral ... Contact Details Dr David Weinberg's reflections on his time as a Hartley Fellow during summer 2001 "A wonderful resource..."
I am a professor of history and director of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. My present research is focused on European Jewry in the immediate post-war era, with special emphasis on the development of a distinctive European Jewish identity. In May-June 2001, I was invited to be a Hartley Fellow at the University of Southampton. While there, I had a rare opportunity to examine the marvellous Anglo-Jewish archives at the Hartley Library, around which the Parkes Institute was founded. The collection, which includes a vast array of documents from the Institute for Jewish Affairs as well as material from the Anglo-Jewish Association, proved invaluable for my research. I was also delighted to find the correspondence of a number of noted British rabbis and communal leaders of the post-war era, including J.H. Hertz, Israel Brodie, Selig Brodetsky, and Solomon Schonfeld. Dr David Weinberg
