F73(1973) revised and updated 2 July 2000. Adams, Henry, EDUCATION OF HENRY ADAMS, THE, 2, 1973, Houghton Mifflin, HB and Trade. "Riverside editions" with introductory material and notes. ASCENT OF MAN, THE, T. V. Show, 1973, Jacob Bronowski, Writer and Host:, This is a pioneering effort in non-fiction television. The series is really a major book done in television. Bronowski presented his theories on man's rise to civilization, the growth of ideas, and the chain of innovation, etc, all in his own unique Marxist/mystical scheme (J.B was a man of intellectual extremes). Rather than use usual documentary techniques, the BBC used a new approach. When
Bronowski talks about some event in some far away place, they put him in the actual setting. It was like watching a peripatetic philosopher who could walk all over the world, just to make a point. Later, Carl Sagan would do a similar series on cosmology (1980), but only James Burke's two shows on scientific innovation would come close to duplicating Bronowski's style and charisma in his arguments. Assagioli, Roberto, ACT OF WILL, THE, 1, 1973, Viking, HB. See 1974 entry.

F78 (1978) revised and updated 12 September 1999. Anson, Jay, AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE, 2, 1978, Bantam, PB. See also 1979 movie title. The Amityville haunting says a lot about the way popular non-fiction is written these days. It was a deal. The Lutz's and the lawyer for the late DeFeo family, William Weber, "sold" the story to Prentice Hall. The publisher then contracted Jay Anson to write their story for them. Anson was very ill at the time, and wrote in his sickbed, from audio tapes provided. Most of his investigating was done by telephone. He never visited the house in the flesh.. There were a lot of factual errors (like what the weather was like on a given day, etc.). Anion is dead now, so is's hard to know if it is just artistic license or not. A close reading will reveal a lot of ambiguous wording that authors sometimes use to distance themselves from the material. At best, the events surrounding the Long Island house seemed to be an orchestrated "media event" (see movie entry 1979). Anthony, Piers (Piers A. D. Jacob), CHAINING THE LADY, 1978, Avon, PB. 2nd novel in the CLUSTER series. See Introduction.

Jacob Bronowski
"Has there ever been a society which has died of dissent? Several have died of conformity in our lifetime." Jacob Bronowski To give you a scant bit of background for the video that we are about to see, I've compiled a few quotes from Jacob Bronowski, from his book Science and Human Values . I've juggled these selections into an order which maybe makes sense in this extremely compressed form, but does not do justice to the original structure. Originally, these were presented in a series of three lectures at MIT in 1953. The book consists of three parts, revised somewhat in 1965. The video is from The Ascent of Man , produced in the 70s. The video production is a bit dated, but the themes are as important today as then. I initially decided to bring this into our class because of the general connection with science and religion. The video deals not only with uncertainty in our measurements, but also in moral issues and how we humans deal with each other. It now seems particularly appropriate in light of the recent events. Bronowski, a scientist and humanist philosopher, raises the question this way:

ENG 1278The Literature of Science Fall Quarter 2001 Instructor:   Professor Stuart Peterfreund Office / Office Hours:   461 HO (Main English Office:  406 HO) / T, 10:30-11:30; W, 2:45-3:45 Telephone:   617-373-2605 (Main English Office:  617-373-2512) E-mail: s.peterfreund@neu.edu Course Policies Prerequisites:   English 1110-11 or their equivalent are prerequisites for taking this course. Attendance:   Up to three unexcused absences (cuts) are allowed.  More than three will cost one full grade point.  More than five will result in a failing grade.  Absences may be excused for a good reason, preferably documented. Format:   You will be expected to come to class having read the material and mastered it to the best of your ability.  If you are having difficulty, at the very least you should arrive with a list of detailed questions to ask by way of helping to clarify the material.  If the class has used freewrites in the past and is amenable to that process, we may consider the option of beginning classesespecially the first classes on each of the textswith a freewrite.  Since the size of the class lends itself to a discussion format, do not expect the instructor to lecture, but do expect questions to which you should be prepared to respond.  If you have no questions of your own and fail to respond to my questions, you may expect a pop quiz as a response to the silence. Grading:  After we have completed our reading and discussion of Bronowski, Kuhn, and Latour, students will be asked to turn in three-to-five page discussions of the following two questions:  according to <name>, what do scientists dowhat is the nature of the scientific undertaking, in other wordsand how do they do what they do?  These discussions are to be written as formal essays, complete with appropriate page citations, bibliographical citations, and footnotes (optional).  If anyone receives a grade of "C" or lower on her/his discussion, s/he should begin at that time to seek tutorial help at the Writing Lab.

Science meets Art: This Quarter and Jacob Bronowski by Thomas Girst Click to enlarge Cover for This Quarter , article by André Breton, edited by Edward W. Titus, Paris: The Black Manikin Press, September 1932 Th is Quarter (vol. V, no. 1) of September 1932 was published and edited by Edward B. Titus. In his third year as editor for the The Black Manickin Press, he also published the memoirs of Kiki de Montparnasse and books by Anaïs Nin. This Quarter 's "Surrealist Number" contains articles, prose and poems by important artists and writers of the movement, among them Salvador Dalí, Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, René Crevel and Tristan Tzara. Samuel Beckett also translated some of the poems. In his editorial note, Edward W. Titus describes the tremendous impact of Surrealism, however acknowledging with embarrassment the unhappiness of guest editor André Breton at having been asked to leave out "politics and such other issues not be[ing] in honeyed accord with Anglo-American censorship usages." It is in this issue that for the first time ever, various unpublished notes by Duchamp appear, two years prior to the publication of his Green Box in 1934. Curiously enough, the chosen notes include various mentionings of the title of Duchamp's posthumously revealed work:
