List of mathematical topics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This page aims to list all Wikipedia articles that are related to Mathematics . This is so that those interested in the subject can monitor changes to the pages by clicking on Related Changes in the sidebar. Everything remotely connected to mathematics, including articles about mathematicians, should be listed here. For a much nicer list of mathematicians, see list of mathematicians The list is not necessary complete or up to date - if you see an article that should be here but isn't (or one that shouldn't be here but is), please do update the page accordingly. A WikiProject is being developed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics regarding issues of form, structure and notation for mathematics articles. Check it out!

Wikipedia:Rouse History of Mathematics
(Redirected from Rouse History of Mathematics There are a series of articles transcribed by Dr. David R. Wilkins (dwilkins@maths.tcd.ie) School of Mathematics Trinity College, Dublin at http://www.maths.tcd.ie/pub/HistMath/People/ They all start with a line: From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Are they fair game to grab as source material for our wikipedia? I know we are scarfing stuff from the 1911 encyclopedia, this is from 1908, so it should be under the same lack of restrictions.... discussion about sending an email, email is written, time elapses

37. Melksham History
Melksham was passed down two more generations to another william brouncker beforeit was conveyed to Sir John Danvers, who married into the family, in 1634.
http://www.rollasmoke.com/melksham.htm
A Short History Of Melksham
The name Melksham is derived from Melchoir's enclosure.
This norseman founded a settlement on the bank of the river Avon probably where there was shallow water to allow crossing, or at a narrow point where fallen trees could span the water. An area of water meadow would be required to feed the animals, and the enclosure would also be close to a ready supply of wood to be used for fuel and making shelters.
The Melksham Forest extended along the river to Cippa's enclosure.(Chippenham) The Domesday Book of 1086 assessed the Lordship of Melksham, which belonged to William the Conqueror, as 84 hides, and the Melksham Forest covered 8,400 acres.
This vast area of forest became the favourite hunting ground of the Tudor kings. In 1158 the estate of Melksham was handed to Humphrey de Bohun III, but, in 1184, King Henry II reclaimed it as a crown possession.
It stayed in royal hands until King Henry III gave the lordship to Alice, Countess of Devon, for life in 1257.
On her death the title reverted to Amesbury Priory.
In 1286 a Royal Charter granted the Prioress rights of tenure and a second Royal Charter gave her free warren.

AHNENTAFEL OF KATHERINE SMYTHE
Just last year, Peter Barton, who researches Haywards of Shropshire, showed me that Rowland Hayward's second wife, Katherine, was the daughter of "Customer" Smythe, prompting me to check sources and post this ahnentafel (Nov 1999, updated Nov 2000). Paul C. Reed, F.A.S.G. (Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists) made a post to soc.genealogy.medieval dated 1998/07/02 re: 'Cromwell, Mirfyn et al' which I used for other leads to data on this family, and he accepted the use of his name and citations on this page. I've been able to get to quite a number of sources but still have a wish list, including Feet of Fines for Kent ... and Beaven, which I cannot find. Note that there had been online, in the Essex pages at GenUKi, a page on the Smythe family of Essex which confused several Thomas Smythes. Kevin Cole, the manager of that Essex page, and Vaughn Baker, author of the earlier text, have kindly welcomed my update of that information . The Dictionary of National Biography is good for straightening out the Thomas Smythes / Smiths.

RESTORATION NAVY. SIGNIFICANT ARCHIVE OF NAVY BOARD WARRANTS, PETITIONS AND LETTERS, SIGNED BY PEPYS AND HIS FELLOW PRINCIPAL OFFICERS OF THE NAVY BOARD, comprising 45 manuscripts signed jointly and severally by combinations of Samuel Pepys (11 signatures, one of them being initials), Sir John Mennes (21), the mathematician William Viscount Brounker, first President of the Royal Society (14), Sir William Penn (10 signatures, one of them being initials), Arthur Earl of Anglesey (1), Captain Thomas Middleton (23, three items being autograph letters signed and two of the signatures being initials), John Tippets (8) with others including Ph[ineas] Petts (autograph letter signed), Tom Warrington, Henry Osborne, Giles Dunster, William Brereton, John Langham and John Gregory, addressed exclusively to Edward Gregory, Clerk of the Cheque at Chatham, the principal naval dockyard, or to him and other officers and clerks, 46 pages, mostly folio, many with endorsements or dockets, some generally light staining and browning, a few more so, three or four documents somewhat darker particularly at restoration down right-hand edges, [The Navy Office, Seething Lane], June 1668 to January 1669 A good representative archive showing Pepys and the Navy Board at work during the time that Pepys was keeping his diary and was, as Clerk of the Acts, rising towards the height of his influence. The documents date from the aftermath of one of the most critical points in the Navy's history when in June 1667 the Dutch took Sheerness and in a daring raid sailed into the River Medway destroying the English Fleet and capturing the Royal Charles. This was in the the words of Pepys's fellow diarist John Evelyn 'as dread a spectacle as ever Englishman saw, and a dishonour never to be wiped out.' The consequences of this disaster were still very much in evidence throughout 1668 and early 1669 when the Navy Board issued the present series of letters and warrants.
