Franklin was born in York, Pennsylvania on February 27, 1823. He entered West Point and graduated first in a class of thirty-nine in 1843. As a comparison, Ulysses S. Grant was also a member of this class, graduating twenty-first. During the Mexican War, Franklin served as an engineer under Colonel Philip Kearney in the South Pass Expedition. It was Franklin who was assigned the job of supervising the construction of the new dome of the Capitol Building in Washington. When the Civil War began, Franklin was appointed a brigadier general on May 17, 1861. At the Battle of Fredericksburg, he rose in command from a brigade to a division, then a corps, to finally commanding two corps in the Army of the Potomac. As Fredericksburg was a horrible defeat for the Union, the commander of the Army of the Potomac, Ambrose Burnside, blamed Franklin. In truth, Franklin followed the orders of Burnside exactly. In a hearing by the Committee on the Conduct of the War, Burnside was able to restrict Franklin's activities for more than five months.

Brilliant work, and by a MICHIGAN man, to boot! Tishomingo Blues - A paperback Novel by Elmore Leonard. Reviewed by Dave Wardell. It is a murder mystery with alot of detail and action revolving around a Civil War Reenactment in Tunica, Ms. The book is both humorous and tense. Making it a great read. There is mention of a reenactment near Flint, Mi and the one at Jackson, Mi. The Dixie Gun Works and Jarnagin get their mention also. The book is such a great read that they are actually thinking about making a movie from it. Non-Fiction: Allegiance Fort Sumter, Charleston, and the Beginning of the Civil War

    Major General
    William Tecumseh Sherman
Probably the second best known of the Union Generals, William Tecumseh Sherman earned a reputation as an eccentric but tough fighter and ruthless leader in the prosecution of total warfare as practiced in the latter stages of the war. Having been born in Ohio, Sherman graduated from West Point with the class of 1840. He served in California during the Mexican War but resigned as a captain in 1853 because of the low pay and poor prospects for promotion endemic in United States Army service at that time. His business enterprises not being entirely successful, Southern secession found him in the post of superintendent of a small military academy in Louisiana (present day Louisiana State University). He promptly resigned the post and returned north where he volunteered for service with the Union army. Sherman presented the city of Savannah to President Lincoln and the country as a Christmas present. From there he turned North into South Carolina. Houses were burned in much greater numbers than during the march across Georgia. Despite the swamps, rain soaked roads, and cold winter weather Sherman's army made steady progress. Charleston fell on February 18, 1865, and Columbia, the State Capitol was taken on the 19th. Much of Columbia was destroyed by fire that each side blamed the other for starting. After the war he remained in the army, replacing Grant as the commander-in-chief and retiring in 1884. He adamantly refused to entertain any notion of seeking political office.

The following marriage intentions were found for the most part in a newspaper called The Lowell Sunday Telegram. In addition to the names of the couple to be married, the paper usually listed their ages, addresses, occupations and if they were widowed or divorced. If they list a widowed or divorced woman, they usually also list her maiden name. Attempts were made to verify the spelling of names but as this was not always possible, the names were copied as printed in the newspaper.

Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. David Burnside: A UUP MP
The Ulster Unionist Party's David Burnside has taken the South Antrim seat off the Democratic Unionist Party. It is a personal victory for Mr Burnside who last year lost out in a by-election to the DUP's William McCrea, following the death of the sitting MP. It was a victory which stunned the Ulster Unionist Party, as South Antrim had been a notoriously safe Ulster Unionist seat. But after the DUP holding the seat for just a few months, the Ulster Unionists have won it back with a majority of about 1,000. Afterwards, Mr Burnside said: "I voted for the agreement. I didn't vote for the treatment of the RUC. "I did not vote for the terrorists in government without decommissioning." "The reason why there has been disillusionment within the unionist community, within my own party and expressed through the Democratic Unionist Party and other unionist parties, is because decommissioning has not taken place," he said.
