History of the Logarithmic Slide Rule This book was originally published in 1909. The author was born in Switzerland but spent all his adult life as an academic in the United States. His book describes the history of the slide rule from its invention in the 1620s up to the start of the 20th century. Those of us living in the age of email, the internet and air travel can only marvel at the effort he must have expended in locating documents held in libraries all over Europe and extracting pertinent information. This version was based on a copy in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, Cambridge University. The book also has 17 plates of slide rules. The whole book can be downloaded in Word document format or as an Adobe PDF file Chapter Contents Preface The author deplores the absence of a book on the history of slide rules in view of their importance in many technical and scientific fields. The invention of Logarithms and of the Logarithmic Line of Numbers A short chapter on Napier's invention of logarithms and on Gunter's scale, which first represented logarithms in other than tabular form.

Numerals and Numerical Notation
An Extended Bibliography
This is a bibliography of over 800 academic publications about numerals, numeral systems, numerical notation and numeration. It is a working bibliography for my doctoral dissertation, The Comparative History of Numerical Notation , which should be completed later this year. The references primarily focus on numeral symbols (like Roman numerals) rather than number words, but there is plenty of information on numeration in general. Most of the sources are in English, but a few are in other languages. If you know of any source that I have not listed, or are one of the few people excluding myself and my thesis supervisor interested in this topic, please contact me Of course, you may not be looking for several hundred obscure papers, but simply wish to find some general sources. If so, please check out my Numeration Books page, where I review about 20 interesting and important books on numerals and numeration. If you would like to purchase any of them, they are available for sale through Amazon.com

    Edward Olney
Edward Olney, son of Benjamin Olney and Lucy Emerson, was born in Moreau, Saratoga County, New York, on July 24, 1827. His ancestry can be traced back to Thomas Olney who accompanied Roger Williams in founding the city of Providence and colony of Rhode Island. Benjamin Olney's family moved to Oakland County, Michigan, in 1833 and, a few months later, settled on a farm in Weston, Wood County, Ohio. Opportunities for formal education on the frontier were sparse, and Olney was largely self-taught. Calloway [2] tells about Edward hiring a neighbor boy to drive the team of oxen on the Olney farm so that he could attend school for six weeks in order to master Day's Algebra . During this time he also ran an arithmetic school at home in the evenings in order to earn the money to pay for his substitute driver. At age 19, Olney began his career as a teacher in the local elementary schools, while studying mathematics, natural science, and languages on his own. Cajori [1] reports that "though he had never studied Latin, he began teaching it and kept ahead of the class because he 'had more application'." In 1848 Olney was hired as a teacher in the district school at Perrysburg, Ohio. The following year he was named principal of the grammar department in the new Union School. Over the next five years he would become the school's superintendent, marry Miss Sarah Huntington (a teacher at the school), and receive an honorary A. M. degree from Madison University. Today there is an Olney School in Lake Township, Wood County, named after him [3].

    Various ways to introduce e
Mary Coupland, School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Technology, Sydney
What is this e number? How is it related to the way things grow? We look at two ways to introduce e without differentiation by first principles: a graphical approach considering and and a compound interest approach. A little history Do you ever wonder whether mathematics is discovered or invented? Regularities in the physical world that lead to numbers like and e seem to lend weight to the former proposition, while reading the history of mathematics, and finding out how various mathematical creations were constructed to meet particular needs of the times, I am led to think that the latter proposition has much merit. It seems that many European mathematicians in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries occupied themselves with the search to make calculations easier, in particular to find ways to replace multiplications by additions. This led to Napier's invention of logarithms, which is well described in Lecture 17 of 'Great Moments in Mathematics' by Howard Eves (Eves, 1983). He explains that Napier's logarithms were not originally written about in terms of indices at all, and were not, as is often assumed, logarithms in base e.
