Euclid
Brown University Library possess a copy of each sixteenth-century translation of Euclid's Elements of Geometry into a modern language. These vernacular editions, grouped around the first Latin edition of 1482, are displayed in chronological sequence, from 1533 (Greek) to 1594 (Arabic). All copies are opened at Book I, proposition 47, "Pythagoras' Theorem," which asserts: "In right-angled triangles the square of the side opposite the right angle is equal to the sum of the squares of the sides containing the right angle." Most of the translations provide proof of this equation (a + b = c using a geometrical construction known as "the bride's chair."
Other first translations into modern European languages were published in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: Dutch (1602), Russian (1739), Swedish (1744), and Danish (1745).

Euclid (ca. 326-ca. 265 BC)
Preclarissimus liber elementorum Euclidis perspicacissimi: in artem geometrie incipit ...
Venice: Erhard Ratdolt, [25 May] 1482.
Euclid's Elements of Geometry has been a primary mathematics text for more than two thousand years. It is a compilation of early Greek mathematical knowledge, synthesized and systematically presented by Euclid in ca. 300 BC. Books I-IV are devoted to plane geometry, Book V deals with the theory of proportions, and Book VI with the similarity of plane figures. Books VII-IX are on number theory, Book X on commensurability and incommensurability, Books XI-XII explore three dimensional geometric objects, and Book XIII deals with the construction of the five regular solids. Later non-Euclidian additions include, Book XIV, which is thought to have been contrbuted by Hypsciles (ca. 200 BC), and Book XV, which may have been added by John of Damascus, or by a 6th-century pupil of Isadoros of Miletos.

Dear Colleagues,
It seems apparent that anyone with an *earnest* interest in the prehistory,
history, and reception of non-Archimedean mathematics should take a close
look at the controversial and juicy history of HORN ANGLES.
This concept loosely defined as the configuration formed by two curves
starting at a point, called the vertex, in a common direction - is also found
in the literature with colorful names such as
o angle of contingence
o curvilinear angle
o angle of contact o cornicular angle o horn-shape angle o horn-like angle o horned angle

This text presents a chronological look at the development of mathematics. It starts with the concept of number, which is the foundation of mathematics. The book then describes how each layer of mathematical knowledge was added and how various cultures contributed to the general mathematical knowledge over the centuries. In many instances, the development of a concept took place in more than one geographical location, such as the idea of logarithms. John Napier of Scotland was the first to publish a work on logarithms, but Jobst Burgi of Switzerland developed a similar idea at about the same time. A chronological table, beginning with the origin of the sun and ending with 1980, places important mathematical developments in relation to historical world wide events. Forty pages of references are included. (Author/JAR) User Comments:

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Johannes Campanus was chaplain to Pope Urban IV and quoted by Bacon as one of the 4 greatest contemporary mathematicians. He published a Latin edition of Euclid 's Elements in 15 books and it was the standard Euclid for 200 years. Most of Campanus's other writings were on astronomy. He wrote Theorica Planetarum which describes the construction of a planetarium, the first to be described by a European. The work also contains detailed descriptions of the longitude of the planets as well as a geometrical description of the motion of the model. Data for the planets was taken from the Almagest and from the Toledan Tables edited by the Arabian astronomer Azarquiel in 1080 based on his own work and that of al'Khwarizmi and al'Battani . Campanus determined the time of each planet's retrograde motion and gave precise instructions on using the tables. He also made calculations in great detail of the distances to the planets and their sizes. Campanus also wrote Tractatus de Sphaera as well as De Computo Ecclesiastico and Calendarium.

Euclid's Geometry
France: c. 1480
Sp Coll MS Gen. 1115
This month's book has been chosen as one of the items to be displayed on Friday 15 June in the exhibition Information Services through the Ages organized by the Library Special Collections Department and the University Archive Services as part of the Information Services Open Day. It is a fifteenth century manuscript of Euclid's Elements in Latin with other texts mainly on geometry.
front flyleaf: early pressmarks Glasgow University was founded in 1451. Although we do not know for sure, this manuscript was possibly used in early teaching at the University. Certainly, it is a typical example of the kind of textbook that would have been used as part of the medieval curriculum. While there is no record of how the manuscript was acquired by the Library, it does bear early University press marks on the front flyleaf: Ff.3. n.5, and another earlier Glasgow mark, now crossed out and obscured, but possibly beginning with a 'G'.
folio 8r: beginning of Euclid's elements The main item in the manuscript (folios 8-172v) is a copy of Euclid's Elements , translated out of Arabic into Latin by the English scholastic philosopher Adelard of Bath. Its colophon states that it was finished being written out on 4 December 1480. This manuscript copy therefore predates the first printed edition, produced in Venice by Erhard Ratdolt in 1482, by just two years.
