SCIENCE FICTION
July 1939 September 1960
Different readers look for different things in Science Fiction. Some want escapist adventure, others want social comment or satire - and there are plenty of excellent outlets for these forms of the genre. But if you're looking for a LITERATURE OF IDEAS, there's only one place to start John W Campbell's Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Throughout the 1940s and 50s this was the home to SF's leading "ideas men", including such greats as A E Van Vogt and Eric Frank Russell, and others less well known such as Raymond F Jones, H Beam Piper, Randall Garrett and Mark Clifton. It also saw some of the earliest publications by such household names as L Ron Hubbard, Isaac Asimov and Robert A Heinlein. Campbell took over the editorship of Astounding in October 1937, but it's generally acknowledged that his definitive style only became fully established with the July 1939 issue (containing first appearances by both Van Vogt and Asimov). Astounding continued at full pace until 1960, when Campbell changed the magazine's name to

Since about 19 , I have conducted genealogical research regarding two Campbell family groups who migrated to the southwestern part of colonial Virginia in the years prior to the American Revolution. This web site presents some of the results of that research but is not intended to be an exhaustive exposition of the history of these branches of the Campbell Clan. These Southwest Virginia Campbells descend from two family groups who settled in Beverley Manor (Orange/Augusta County) Virginia in the 1730's and 1740's. Many notable political and military figures have descend ed from these Campbell progenitors.

Planetfall
Editorial panel: John Alston Campbell
Review published on 21 August 2001.
A little more than just Grotch guano
Planetfall is one of Meretzky's signature works in interactive fiction. Planetfall is a work of interactive fiction published by Infocom and penned by the infamous Infocom Implementor Steve Meretzky. You will have cursed his name at least once if you have ever played Sorcerer or The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy , but you should also be given a medal if you have completed either title without hints. Planetfall is Meretzky’s first solo effort at writing for Infocom. As a pure text adventure, this game is interactive fiction in its original and truest sense of the form. The only graphics in this game comes from your mind, making it a title to be avoided at all costs if past gaming with Sierra On-Line titles has obliterated your imagination!
Story
Life is not so good as you begin Planetfall. Following in the footsteps of no less than five generations worth of ancestors working for the Stellar Patrol of the Third Galactic Union, you too have signed up for the service. Your family has high expectations. Your great-great-grandfather was High Admiral, after all. You have just been transferred to the SPS Feinstein, away from kindly Ensign First Class Lim and into the clutches of Ensign Cadet First Class Blather. Blather summarily confiscates your Double Fanucci cards, vetoes your application for Grotch feeding detail and relegates you instead to cleaning out their cages. You feel that you are forever stuck at the lowly rank of Ensign Seventh Class and are seriously thinking of quitting the patrol.

The 1940s saw a great wave of science fiction writers, the first to grow up reading the pulps and then writing stories of their own. Astounding, now entering its 70th year of publishing under the name Analog, was at the heart of this explosion of writers, and John W. Campbell, Jr. was the heart of Astounding Images

Related Links John W. Campbell Jr. (fan site) The John W. Campbell Award Analog Campbell started out as a writer, making his debut in 1930 with the short story, "When the Atoms Failed". He was only 20 at the time, but before long he was second only to E. E. "Doc" Smith as a smasher of galaxies. However, while Campbell was a solid science fiction writer, he was born to be an editor. He took over Astounding at the end of 1937, and within three months it was unquestionably his magazine. He had strong ideas about what made good science fiction and he wasn't afraid to make writers do it his way. According to Theodore Sturgeon, "Writers who always sold their stories to editors were suddenly faced with an editor who sold stories to them instead ... and could he sell!"
