'To sum up, we are not indebted to Cantor only for his initiative in developing a theory of transfinite sets. He proved the most important theorems of the new theory himself and laid the groundwork for the present-day definition of the concept... By his bold advance into the realm of the infinite, Cantor ignited twentieth-century research on the fundamentals' (DSB; see vol. III pp. 52-58, and Encyclopedia of philosophy vol. II, pp 20-22, for a detailed analysis of his work on set theory).
Cantor's paper is dated 23 December 1873.

The Foundation of Set Theory CANTOR, Georg Ueber eine Eigenschaft des Inbegriffes aller reellen algebraischen Zahlen. [in:] Journal für die reine und angewandtle Mathematik... vol. 76, Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1874 4to (255 x 195 mm), pp 258-262, in the complete journal volume, bound with vols 76 and 78; some occasional slight spotting, a very good copy in contemorary half calf and marbled boards, rebacked. £2500
First edition of Cantor's epochal paper, the foundation of set theory. 'Georg Cantor (1845-1918) distinguishes the sizes of infinite sets, defining two such sets to have the same "power" if and only if their elements can be put into one-to-one correspondence... He then proceeds to prove that the set of all algebraic numbers has the same power as the set of natural numbers, that is, that it is "denumerable" or "countable," but the set of real numbers is not denumerable. He thereby shows that transcendental numbers not only exist but are nondenumerably infinite. Cantor's paper presenting this work, "Über eine Eigenschaft des Inbegriffes aller reellen algebraischen Zahlen" (On a property of the collection of all real algebraic numbers), is considered the first formal publication on set theory' (Parkinson, Breakthroughs p. 385).

Georg Cantor The founder of the set theory. Born in St. Petersberg, Russia, and studied in Germany. His studies on the nature of "infinity" enabled us to treat this abstruse concept with mathematical precision. Cantor discovered an ingenious argument for proving that there are more real numbers than natural numbers (the cadinaliy is greater with the former than with the latter); since this argument makes use of a two dimensional table of infinie elements and the elements on the diagonal line (from left top to right bottom) are crucial, this is called "diagonal argument", and it became an indispensable method for logicians's proof. For instance, Goedel's incompleteness makes an essential use of it for cnstructing an "undecidable proposition". BACK TO CANTOR PICTURE BACK TO GALLERY INDEX Last modified March 27, 1999. Georg Cantor
Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor, b. Mar. 3, 1845, d. Jan. 6, 1918, was a Russian-born German mathematician best known as the creator of Set Theory and for his discovery of the transfinite numbers. He also advanced the study of trigonometric series, was the first to prove the nondenumerability of the real numbers, and made significant contributions to dimension theory. Cantor received his doctorate in 1867 and accepted a position at the University of Halle in 1869, where he remained. Closely related to Cantor's work in transfinite set theory was his definition of the continuum as a connected, perfect set. He never doubted the absolute truth of his work, but following the discovery of the paradoxes of set theory, he left the defense of transfinite set theory to younger mathematicians such as David Hilbert, Bertrand Russell, and Ernst Zermelo.

GEORG CANTOR by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1484. Today, we wonder about counting to infinity. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W hen I was in grade school, Time magazine ran an article that snatched my imagination. Someone proposed a new number called the googol a one followed by a hundred zeros. Later I learned that it wouldn't help very much in counting real objects, because there aren't that many real objects in the whole universe even atoms. But still, we've all wondered where counting ends and infinity begins. And we have good reason for asking about infinity. Every engineering student soon learns that infinity is not just the end of numbers. If we ask how real systems behave when velocity, or time, or force becomes infinite if we ask about the character of infinity we get unexpected and profoundly useful answers. Georg Cantor also wondered about infinity. He was born in Russia in 1845. He wanted to become a violinist like his mother. But his father, a worldly merchant, wouldn't have it. When he was seventeen, his father died, and Cantor went on to finish a doctorate in mathematics, in Berlin. He was only twenty-two when he did.

The following paper is available: Cantor, G., Ueber die Ausdehnung eines Satzes aus der Theorie der trigonometrischen Reihen , Mathematische Annalen, vol. 5, pp. 123-132 (1872). The title of this paper may be translated into English as `On the generalization of a theorem from the theory of trigonometric series'. In this paper, Cantor introduces his well-known construction of the real number system in which each real number is represented as a Cauchy sequence of rational numbers. Two Cauchy sequences of rational numbers represent the same real number if and only if the difference of the two sequences converges to zero. Cantor uses this construction of the real number system in order to generalize a theorem he had earlier proved concerning the uniqueness of trigonometric series representations of functions on an interval. Abstract
This paper is a biographical description of the work of Georg Cantor and his work in the development of set theory. In his time, these hypotheses were considered greatly controversial by other mathematicians. However, now they are an integral part of the study of mathematics.
From The Paper
"Georg attended several private schools in Frankfurt, and in 1859, entered the distinguished Grossherzoglich Hessiche Provinzialrealschule in Darmstadt. He left this institution in 1860 with high recommendations in mathematics. His father discouraged the study of math due to the fact that he wished him to become an engineer, a job that paid considerably more than mathematics. He originally attended Grossherzogliche Hoehere Gewerbeschule (Grand-Ducal Higher Polytechnic, later changed to Technische Hochschule) at Darmstadt following his father’s wishes and studying Engineering. Later, when Georg convinced his father that his heart was truly in math, his father relented and he began the study of Mathematics in 1862 (Johnson, 1997). "
