Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Georg Cantor founded set theory and introduced the concept of infinite numbers with his discovery of cardinal numbers. He also advanced the study of trigonometric series. Weierstrass Kummer and Kronecker Cantor founded set theory and introduced the mathematically meaningful concept of infinite numbers with his discovery of transfinite numbers. He also advanced the study of trigonometric series and was the first to prove the nondenumerability of the real numbers. His first papers (1870-1872) showed the influence of Weierstrass 's teaching, dealing with trigonometric series. In 1872 he defined irrational numbers in terms of convergent sequences of rational numbers. In 1873 he proved the rational numbers countable, i.e. they may be placed in 1-1 correspondence with the natural numbers. A transcendental number is an irrational number that is not a root of any polynomial equation with integer coefficients.

The “ghost “ resembles nothing so much as a somnambulist, or the dream-walk of one living person made visible, telepathically, to another living person. Almost the only sign of consciousness given by the appearances is their shyness; on being spoken to or approached they general]y vanish. Not infrequently they are taken, at first sight, for living human beings. In darkness they are often luminous, otherwise they would be invisible Unexplained noises often, but not always, occur in houses where these phenomena are perceived. Evidence is only good, approximately, when a series of persons, in the same house, behold the same appearance, without being aware that it has previously been seen by others. Naturally it is almost impossible to prove this ignorance. they go. (A. i) the introduction of a notion of fluxus instead of indivisibles;
(ii) a division of the geometric figures known at that time into twelve classes;
(iii) a skilful use of common properties of certain figures belonging to the same class, a quality denoted 'homogeneity' by Fabry.
Using this method, Fabry managed to operate quite successfully in his research on infinitesimals. Leibniz characterized it, along with the work of Cavalieri, Gregorius a St Vincentio and Pascal, as important for the discovery of the calculus ... In his Opusculum geometricum, which must be viewed in the context of Pascal's famous challenge of 1658, Fabry presents a wealth of significant single achievements: an ingenious quadrature of the cycloid, various quadratures and cubatures which amount to special cases of ¦xnsin x dx, ¦sinnx dx and ¦¦arcsin x dxdy, as well as determinations of the centre of mass for segments of sine areas and cycloids, including the solids of revolution around their axes and tangents of the vertex' (Fellmann).
Fabri has not received the attention he deserves from historians, largely because of a severely prejudiced report on the present book by Moritz Cantor in his influential Geschichte der Mathematik, Cantor accused Fabri of plagiarizing Cavalieri's work on indivisibles (and these charges have been repeated by later authors, e.g. Gjertsen), but Fellmann has refuted these allegations, pointing out that Fabri actually refers to his 'great master' Cavalieri and is careful to distinguish his own contributions.
