In 1938/39 upon invitation by the Physics Department, the mathematics books were moved into the Physics Library and the name was changed to Physics-Mathematics Library. At that time the Physics Building was the current Social Sciences Building on the Main Quadrangle. The existing location was built in 1948 with an addition in 1963. The name of the library was officially changed to Math-Physics Library in 1978 when the Library system joined the OCLC network. At this time (1997) the Math-Physics collection consists of 110,000 volumes with about 20,000-30,000 volumes in local and remote storage. Formats include paper, cd-rom, microform, computer diskettes, and videos. Of growing interest is the provision of electronic access to bibliographic databases, reference materials, and electronic journals through the World Wide Web and the Internet. The library supports undergraduate instruction with a collection of the most important textbooks in the major areas of mathematics. The intent is to offer a variety of texts rather than to have an exhaustive collection. The collection excludes support for SAT exams and high school equivalency exams; and it does not collect preprints and reprints.

Brian Snyder Lake Superior State University "Magic Numbers in the Arithmetic of Function Fields" We will examine the structure of continuous functions on a function field of prime characteristic p. Beginning in the 1930's, Leonard Carlitz began working with functions over a polynomial ring with coefficients in a finite field. In particular, these functions were used to evaluate sums of powers of polynomials of fixed degrees which have a simple formula based on their p-adic expansion. We will examine the basis of higher order differential operators to help explain the significance of these numbers and see an example of their use. Andrew Poe Northern Michigan University “Reevaluating Sorting” Sorting algorithms are fundamental to computer science. Most computer science students learn about them in their first year of computer science. Sorting, itself, has been considered pretty much a "done deal" since the 1960's. However, general purpose sorting software appears to be based on theoretical principles better applied to computers of the 1960's than to computers of the present era. "Traditional" sorting algorithms are rethought, represented, and compared to Hoare's QuickSort algorithm as traditionally implemented within the C programming language (as well as in other places).

Math Department Celebration
On Tuesday, April 28, the mathematics department will honor all math majors and, in particular, our various prize-winners at a party in the math department lounge. The events will begin in room 113 at 4:30 with a short presentation by Garrett Mitchener, Jeff Mermin and John Thacker of their award-winning paper on grade inflation. At 5:00, with the assistance of Dean Robert Thompson, scholarship recipients, participants in the Virginia Tech, Putnam and Mathematical Modeling competitions will be recognized and the Julia Dale and the Menger awards and checks will be conferred. This will be followed by plenty of food for all. All math majors, graduate students and faculty are encouraged to attend this event. For some students, this may be the last opportunity to meet and talk informally with math faculty and friends. A good calculator does not need artificial aids. Lao Tze, from the Tao Te Ching
Contests
Outstanding Modeling Team
This year's team for the Mathematical Contest in Modeling spent from Friday morning until Monday afternoon in early February locked away in the depths of the Physics Building, working on the Grade Inflation Problem. The team, consisting of Jeff Mermin '00, John Thacker '01, and Garrett Mitchener '99, earned a ranking of Outstanding, the highest possible award. Only seven teams world wide earned such a high ranking. The team has been invited to present their paper at a math conference in Toronto, expenses paid. The two problems for this year were to render oblique cross sections of MRI scans, and to find a way to select the top ten percent of students in a college where the average grade is an A-. Unlike the problems in most math competitions, these problems have no single right answer. Solution papers are judged based on creativity, clarity, and completeness.

Fibonacci (c.1175 - c.1240)
mathematician
Fibonacci was probably the greatest genius of number theory during the 2000 years between Diophantus and Fermat. The sequence defined by F(1) = 1, F(2) = 1, and
F(n) = F(n-1) + F(n-2) for n = 3, 4, 5, ... is named the Fibonacci sequence. Fibonacci, also known as Leonardo of Pisa, was born in Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower (inclined at an angle of 16.5 degrees to the vertical). Little is known of his life, and no portrait exists. However, a statue of Fibonacci was erected by the citizens of Pisa. In 1978, Frank Johnson took a picture, seen here, of the head of the Fibonacci statue, some fifteen feet above ground. The statue stands within the Fortezza Camp Santo off Lungarno Fibonacci or Via Fibonacci along the Arno River at Giardino Scotto (Teatro Estivo). One of the best modern sources of information about Fibonacci is the following article: A. F. Abstract by Prof. J. Brillhart
Certain Elliptic Integrals and Their Orthogonal Polynomials.
In the early 1960's, Leonard Carlitz published two papers in which a sequence of polynomials was derived from the generating function e^xsn^-1(t,k) , where sn^-1(t,k) is the inverse of the Jacobi elliptic function sn(t,k) < k . He showed these polynomials formed an orthogonal sequence. This talk will settle the general question as to what functions f(t) can be used to obtain orthogonal sequences in the same way from the generating function e^xf(t) Much more is involved with this development beyond this basic question. One interesting feature is a kind of "looking-glass world" associated with the development. Some new information is obtained about the coefficients in the Maclaurin expansion of sn(t,k) and other Jacobi elliptic functions. The talk will be at the level I think Euler would have enjoyed.
