Chronology Carnot's France Britain and Venice Steered the French Revolution Carnot's General System for Military Operations ... Editors' Note: Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr., during his 1996 campaign for the Democratic Presidential nomination, frequently referred to the conceptions of the great French military strategist Lazare Carnot, as an example of the kind of approach that is needed today to achieve victory over the British-backed forces of oligarchism and usury. At an EIR seminar on July 17, for example, LaRouche described his own campaign to impeach Tom Ridge, the Republican governor of Pennsylvania, whose cuts in medical and social service budgets amount to a Nazi-style crime against humanity. LaRouche introduced the campaign with reference to Carnot: ``Back in 1793, France, under a terrible government, was overrun by invading armies which were victorious on every front. The word in Paris was that the defeat and consequent dismemberment of France, was a military inevitability. At that point, they found a `sucker' to take over the defense forces of France. His name was Lazare Carnot. He was a rather famous military genius, who had once spent time in the Bastille because of court politics; who had been a student of Gaspard Monge, who was the leading scientific thinker of France, and, at that point, of Europe.

French Soldier
A staunch republican, Lazare Carnot was one of the men who voted for the execution of Louis XVI and his one desire was to see France strong enough to defend itself, and its ideals, against the reactionary nations intent on destroying it. Carnot set about reorganising the French army with mass conscription and the amalgamation (l'amalgame) of two battalions of conscripts/volunteers with a regular army battalion. This not only gave France's armies greater manpower, but sped up the process by which green troops gained experience. Carnot also proved his abilities in the field, helping to win the battle of Wattignies As a member of the Committee of Public Safety, he risked his neck by fighting with Maximilien Robespierre but, in the end, that saved his life because he survived the fall of Robespierre and his cronies.

Pronunciation Key
Carnot, Lazare Nicolas Marguerite , French revolutionary, known as the organizer of victory for his role in the French Revolutionary Wars . A military engineer by training, Carnot became the military genius of the Revolution and was chiefly responsible for the success of the French in the wars. A member of the Legislative Assembly, the Convention, and the Committee of Public Safety, he made himself almost indispensable through his military knowledge. After the fall of Maximilien Robespierre, who was primarily responsible for the Reign of Terror, Carnot managed to avoid punishment for his own part in the Terror and became a member of the Directory . He was ousted from the Directory in the coup of 18 Fructidor (Sept., 1797) and fled abroad. He returned in 1799 and served as minister of war (1800) and in the tribunate under Napoleon Bonaparte ( Napoleon I ). In the next few years he wrote several works on mathematics and military engineering; in 1810 appeared his masterpiece

Napoleon appointed him governor of the town of Antwerp, where he remained until after the fall of the empire. Carnot sided with the Restoration, but in July 1814 he published his Memoire au roi en juillet 1814 , in which he denounced the excesses of the reaction under the Bourbon king. During the Hundred Days, when Napoleon attempted to reestablish his power, Lazare Carnot served as minister of the interior, and, after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Carnot encouraged him to resist, but in vain. He was elected to the Governmental Commission by the Chamber of Representatives on June 22, 1815, but the Second Restoration marked the end of Carnot's political career. In July 1815 Carnot was exiled from France.

The Army
The General Order is always to manoeuver in a body and on the attack; to maintain strict but not pettifogging discipline; to keep the troops constantly at the ready; to employ the utmost vigilance on sentry go; to use the bayonet on every possible occasion; and to follow up the enemy remorselessly until he is utterly destroyed.

Þunu da belirtelimki, geometrik þekillerle ilgili problemlerde -bugün artýk bütün matematikçiler tarafýndan kabullenmiþ bulunan- (I) ve (-) iþaretlerinin kullanýlmasýný usulünü Carnot'a borçluyuz. Carnot'un fotoðrafýný görmek için týklayýn Gültekin Buzkan'a teþekkürler...
