Sadi Carnot was the eldest son of Lazare Carnot and he was born in the Palais du Petit-Luxembourg. His younger brother was Hippolyte Carnot. At the time of Sadi's birth, his father was a member of the Directory, the French Revolutionary government which lasted four years from November 1795 to November 1799. Sadi was given named after a medieval Persian poet and philosopher called Sa'di of Shiraz. Sadi Carnot was born at a time of unrest and political turmoil in France and, due the position of his father, whose fortunes changed dramatically many times, he was brought up in a totally unstable environment of interacting politics and science. His father was appointed to the high office of Napoleon's minister of war in 1799. Lazare Carnot resigned in 1807 and devoted himself to the education of his two sons. Sadi had a fine teacher in his father, who taught him mathematics and science as well as languages and music. Poisson and Arago were among his teachers.

Two years later his son sadi carnot was born. His son sadi carnot visited him inMagdeburg in 1821 and it is clear that Lazare carnot influenced his son.

Lazare Carnot to submit for a prize in a competition. He revised it in 1781 and it was eventually published in 1783. It deals with mechanics and areas of engineering. The following year he declined an invitation to enter the Prussian service and, in the same year he was promoted to captain. From 1787 he became a member of the Dijon Academy while he was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1791 and to the National Convention in 1792. He directed the Army of the North after April 1793 becoming in that year a leading member of the Committee of General Defence and a member of the Committee of Public Safety. In 1794, under direction from Carnot and Monge Sadi Carnot was born. The year 1797 was an eventful one for Carnot. In this year he published his famous text The book is introduced with the words:- As however everything indicates that there will be a new turn in the culture of mathematics, the author deems it apposite to publish this monograph.

Carnot, Sadi (1796-1832)

French physicist who developed the theory of heat engines in (1824). He proposed that work was generated by the passage of caloric from a warmer to a cooler body, with caloric being conserved in the process. Clausius showed, however, that heat was, in fact, not conserved. Carnot qualitatively proposed the reversible Carnot cycle and discovered that the efficiency of a heat engine depended only on its input and output temperatures Carnot (Lazare)

His famous work on the motive power of heat ( 1824) is concerned with the relation between heat and mechanical energy. Carnot devised an ideal engine in which a gas is allowed to expand to do work, absorbing heat in the process, and is expanded again without transfer of heat but with a temperature drop. The gas is then compressed, heat being given off, and finally it is returned to its original condition by another compression, accompanied by a rise in temperature. This series of operations, known as Carnot's cycle, shows that even under ideal conditions a heat engine cannot convert into mechanical energy all the heat energy supplied to it; some of the heat energy must be rejected. This is an illustration of the second law of thermodynamics. Carnot's work anticipated that of Joule, Kelvin, and others. Carnot, Lazare Nicolas Marguerite

Carnot, Sadi
in full NICOLAS-LÉONARD-SADI CARNOT (b. June 1, 1796, Paris, Fr.d. Aug. 24, 1832, Paris), French scientist who described the Carnot cycle, relating to the theory of heat engines. Carnot was the eldest son of the French Revolutionary figure Lazare Carnot and was named for a medieval Persian poet and philosopher, Sa'di of Shir a z. His early years were a period of unrest, and the family suffered many changes of fortune. His father fled into exile soon after Sadi's birth; in 1799 he returned to be appointed Napoleon's minister of war but was soon forced to resign. A writer on mathematics and mechanics as well as military and political matters, the elder Carnot now had the leisure to direct his son's early education. Sadi entered the École Polytechnique in 1812, an institution providing an exceptionally fine education, with a faculty of famous scientists aware of the latest developments in physics and chemistry, which they based on a rigorous mathematics. By the time Sadi graduated in 1814, Napoleon's empire was being rolled back, and European armies were invading France. Soon Paris itself was besieged, and the students, Sadi among them, fought a skirmish on the outskirts of the city. During Napoleon's brief return to power in 1815, Lazare Carnot was minister of the interior, but, following the emperor's final abdication, he fled to Germany, never to return to France.
