The Scientist 6[1]:11, Jan. 06, 1992
Letter
My Mentor, My Self
By Henry Heatherly In regard to the article on mentoring in the Oct. 28, 1991, issue of The Scientist [page 19], I find the comment that "it has become crucial for older, white, male scientists to become comfortable mentoring people who are not carbon copies of themselves" to be an inaccurate reflection of the way things are. I am one of those "older, white, male scientists." In my 23 years of being a professor of mathematics, I have had about as many female graduate students as males. My first doctoral student was a black man. Neither I nor any of my colleagues feel uncomfortable with female or minority graduate students. I personally have done much to help junior colleagues in their research: male or female, black or otherwise. In only one respect do I (or my colleagues, to the best of my knowledge) look for "clones"; namely, we are looking for talent. And it comes in all sizes, shapes, colors, and genders. Of course, the above remarks are based on personal experience and anecdotal evidence. But they fit in well with the reflections reported in autobiographical remarks I have read by some outstanding female mathemati- cians, such as Dame Mary Cartwright and Olga Taussky-Todd. They also fit in well with comments made by many female mathematicians and black mathematicians with whom I have become acquainted. Almost every one of these people expresses high regard for their doctoral adviserswho, for the mathematicians to whom I refer, were all males, white, and "older."

Attack on Gelt Town!
As I write, lurking in an upstairs bedroom at the 'Woolgatherers' Arms', the roar of cannon and crash of falling masonry is all but deafening. The 'Lady Veronica', out of Port Levaca, is bombarding Gelt Town with all the fury at her disposal. What, then, has brought the horrors of war to this sleepy town, basking quietly in northern Yapen? What, but international intrigue and espionage, would be my guess. For the fact is that the local authorities, commanded by King Geraint's agent Major Relf, have rounded up a Sib spy ring based here in the town and at nearby Castle Villus. The spies are currently being held in the Donjon, Gelt Town's fortress, and it is that building which is coming under the most ferocious fire. Willoughby Marsh
Adderbury Playhouse Nears Completion
The daughter of a Salemi vintner, Sakahalin joined the Company of St Aula at the age of fourteen, and had committed herself to a life of Introspection before the Dramatarch summoned her to Palawan after seeing her famous triptych 'The Temptation of St Monksilver' in Galena Auditorium. Though the tremendous size and scope of Sakahalin's works are already famous throughout the world, the Adderbury Playhouse is already said to be her greatest achievement yet.
Medarchs Boiled in Rast
Does this act spell the opening of a new chapter of Lapangi heretic-bashing? If so, it can only give we free folk of Sibutan cause to give thanks to our ancestors who fled the Empire's oppression, and to have pity for those poor unfortunates of the North who seem doomed to labour under its yoke.

The Beothuk Shanawdithit Early Settlers ... back to top I t took 600 million years to get Central Newfoundland off the ocean floor. It took another 40,000 years to form our major geographical features, particularly the Exploits Valley, Exploits River, and Bay of Exploits including the vegetation and wild life therein. It took 4000-5000 years to both introduce and to bring about the extinction of at least three major groups of people: the Maritime Archaic Indians, the Palaeo Eskimos, and the Recent Prehistoric Indians. Then came the Beothuk, followed by the white men. R everend Amadeus Anspach, an early Missionary of the Church of England in Newfoundland, suggests that the name of the river and the Bay of Exploits into which it flows was "probably so called from the successful re-encounters with the native Indians who are said to frequent it during the summer season..." (Anspach, 1827). The Beothuk back to top T he Beothuk Indians of Newfoundland were the first North American Indians to be encountered by European explorers. The custom of painting their bodies, clothing, and practically everything they owned with red ochre led to the early explorers calling them the Red Indians. This misnomer was subsequently applied to all North American tribes (Fardy, 1988). T hey were a hunting and gathering people who maintained a yearly cycle of movement between the coast and the deep interior. Timed moves allowed them to be in the locations where food resources were in season. Their social organization, which was probably altered by outside pressures from the white settlers, appears to have been loose grouping along family lines of 20-30 people with an informal leadership system.

"Mary Cartwright made many contributions in classical analysis , but is best remembered by many for her work on forced nonlinear oscillations. On reading her papers on these latter applications, it is clear that she had a deep and abiding appreciation for the physical phenomenon as well as its underlying mathematics. Her prescient work (especially with Littlewood) anticipated some of the geometrical ideas that are fundamental to chaotic dynamics and represents an important milestone in the evolution of our thinking about dynamical complexity." An Interview with Dame Mary Cartwright, D. B. E., F. R. S.
James Tattersall and Shawnee McMurran Mary Cartwright (1900-1998) was a British mathematician who made important contributions to the theory of functions and differential equations. G. H. Hardy was her thesis adviser, she collaborated with J. E. Littlewood, and was Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge. Here is an interview, giving some details of her life and times, and some information that does not ordinarily get into print, e.g., "I learned that if Lefschetz stopped asking questions for five minutes he was asleep." Arctangent Sums
Louis Bragg You probably didnÕt know that the sum of the arctangents of (sinh 1)/(cosh n ) as n goes from 1 to infinity is 3 p/ 4, take away the arctangent of e, and you are excused if you don't care, but here is a clever method for generating such identities. Models for Growth
