This page is listed as 'Oxford 1969' in the Links2Go Key Resources in Number Theory In August 1969 there was a Computers in Number Theory Conference held in Oxford, England. Towards the end a group photograph was taken of most of the participants, and some family members. Was it the day - 21 st August - when L. J. Mordell's book on Diophantine Equations was launched, in Jesus College, by Academic Press? Almost everyone bought a signed copy of Mordell's book, and I still have mine (which is how I know the exact date. I suppose most people bought a copy of the photo, and I have carted mine about with me over the years). I note that the photograph was taken by someone from the company Gillman and Soame (presumably of Oxford). Because of the dimensions of the photo I have had it split into a left and right half (thanks to my colleague Paul Murphy for doing it for me). Many thanks to (in alphabetical order) Paul Bateman (aided by Bruce Berndt and Heini Halberstam), David Boyd, John Brillhart, Michal Bulant, David Cantor, Harvey Cohn (who eventually, in November 99, supplied me with a complete list), Jean Cougnard, Andrew Granville, Peter Pleasants (aided by Nelson Stephens), Daniel Lazard, Odile Lecacheux, Phil Leonard, Keith Matthews, Jim Milne, Hugh Montgomery, Richard Pinch, Eric Reyssat and John Stillwell for contributing identifications. LOGVEC Spring Seminar - 23 May 2002 Modern Apprenticeships - the Way Forward This year's Spring Seminar was hosted by the Butchers' Company and the topic for discussion was Modern Apprenticeships, The Way Forward. The speakers' included Sir John Cassels CB FCGI and Martin Lamb from the Learning and Skills Council. Captain Victor Lucas (Plumbers), who is Vice-Chairman of LOGVEC and Chairman of the Learning and Skills Working Group, chaired the afternoon seminar. He opened by welcoming guests, thanking the Butchers' Company for their hospitality and apologising for the absence of the LOGVEC Chairman, Robert Waters (Masons), who was unable to attend due to a hospital stay. He then introduced the speakers and gave background to their involvement with Modern Apprenticeships. Sir John Cassels was Chairman of the Modern Apprenticeship Advisory Committee which reported in September 2001 putting forward a 3 year action plan for the development, promotion and delivery of modern apprenticeships. The Committee's recommendations have been broadly accepted by DfES and the Learning and Skills Council and are now being implemented. In the course of a career in the civil service, Sir John was Director of the Manpower Services Commission in 1975-81 and later became Director General of the National Economic Development Office (1983-88).

Many heroic men and women joined forces with others in a vast network that helped runaway slaves secure freedom. Three groups of people were most active in the Underground Railroad efforts in southern Ohio. They were the Presbyterians, the Quakers, and Free People of Color. These brave people risked the loss of property, money and imprisonment if caught hiding or helping fugitives. Some people were caught by Pro-Slavery forces and beaten because of their commitment to helping runaways to freedom. Three or four Underground Railroad trails or routes were used by fugitives in Ross County. Trails began at the Ohio River and ended at Lake Erie, though for some, the trail ended in southern Ohio. Fugitives sometimes stayed in African American Settlements in southern Ohio, while others found freedom in Canada. Escapees crossed the Ohio River at Ripley, Portsmouth and Gallipolis. Fugitives running on the Western Route crossed the Ohio River at Ripley and were often hidden by the residents of the Africa Hill Settlement or by Presbyterians. From there fugitives were conducted to Red Oak (Brown County) to West Union in Adams County. Presbyterian conductors took escaping slaves from West Union to Tranquillity and then crossed into Highland County at Sinking Springs.

CHEATLE SILVIS STOREY posted by Carrie Cook on Wednesday, April 1, 1998
I am looking for information on the names CHEATLE, SILVIS, and STOREY. Some of my ancestors are: Irene Cheatle, Joseph Cheatle Sr., Joseph Cheatle Jr., Amelia Storey (from England), and David Silvis, and they lived in or near St. Marys, PA. I do not have much information on this side of the family and would welcome any help you could give. Thanks.
HASCHALK posted by Kaye on Thursday, April 2, 1998
I'm looking for information on my great- grandparents, John and Anna HASCHALK who lived in Johnsonburg, PA. They had eight children: John, Joseph, Anthony, Bessie, Clare, Mary and Helen. They later moved to Renovo, PA. John is possibly of Slovak descent and some of the letters may have been omitted from the name to "Americanize" it.
GURBA MERGES posted by Marion Baronich on Friday, April 10, 1998
My mother-in-law Mary Gurba was born in Byrnedale 13/11/05. Her father being Michael GURBA and her mother Elizabeth MERGES. Michael died before Mary was born. They came to PA from Czechoslavakia date unknown. I am trying to get some information on them as specifically on Michael's death. Since there was no record in Elk County of his death. I believe the church was Our Lady of Help of Christians. I do know that Elizabeth married Michael's brother John in February of 1906. Any help checking the church records on these people would be greatly appreciated.
