10.6. Cauchy, Augustin (1789-1857)
IRA Augustin Cauchy was the mathematician that set the foundation of rigor in modern analysis. A product of the revolutions in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, he provided the revolutionary ideas that set this branch of mathematics on its present course. He is also known as being one of the most prolific writers in the history of the science. Augustin Louis Cauchy was born in Paris, France, on August 21, 1789, only a month after the storming of the Bastille. His father, a government official and staunch royalist, recognized the coming revolution and quickly moved his family to a country cottage in Arcueil. Having escaped the guillotine, the family was poor and the young boy was generally malnourished. For the rest of his life, this early poverty left the future mathematician in a state of ill-health. During his eleven year stay at the cottage, Augustin received a classical education and a strong disposition for the monarchy from his father, who wrote his own textbooks in verse, and strict Catholic religious training from his mother. This training would influence the rest of his life. His zealous political and religious beliefs would alienate this great mathematician from the majority of his countrymen. Augustin Cauchy died on May 23, 1857, after contracting a fever on a trip to the country to help restore his health. His last words were, "Men die but their works endure."

Cauchy, Augustin Louis
French mathematician who employed rigorous methods of analysis. His prolific output included work on complex functions, determinants, and probability, and on the convergence of infinite series. In calculus, he refined the concepts of the limit and the definite integral.
Cauchy has the credit for 16 fundamental concepts and theorems in mathematics and mathematical physics, more than any other mathematician. His work provided a basis for the calculus. He provided the first comprehensive theory of complex numbers, which contributed to the development of mathematical physics and, in particular, aeronautics.
In 1805 Cauchy provided a simple solution to the problem of Apollonius, namely to describe a circle touching three given circles, and in 1816 he published a paper on wave modulation. In mechanics he substituted the concept of the continuity of geometrical displacements for the principle of the continuity of matter and in astronomy he described the motion of the asteroid Pallas.

Augustin Louis Cauchy
Augustin Louis Cauchy's father was active in his education. Laplace and Lagrange were visitors at the Cauchy family home, and Lagrange in particular seems to have taken an interest in young Cauchy's mathematical education. Lagrange advised Cauchy's father that his son should obtain a good grounding in languages before starting a serious study of mathematics, so he spent two years studying classical languages. In 1810 Cauchy took up his first job in Cherbourg to work on port facilities for Napoleon's English invasion fleet. In addition to his heavy workload Cauchy undertook mathematical researches, and he proved in 1811 that the angles of a convex polyhedron are determined by its faces. He submitted his first paper on this topic then, encouraged by Legendre and Malus, he submitted a further paper on polygons and polyhedra in 1812. Cauchy felt that he had to return to Paris if he was to make an impression with mathematical research. In 1815, he was appointed assistant professor of analysis at the Ecole Polytechnique. In 1816 he won the Grand Prix of the French Academy of Science for a work on waves. He achieved real fame however when he submitted a paper to the Institute solving one of Fermat's claims on polygonal numbers made to Mersenne. Politics now helped Cauchy into the Academy of Sciences when Carnot and Monge fell from political favour and were dismissed and Cauchy filled one of the two places. By 1830, the political events in Paris and the years of hard work had taken their toll and Cauchy decided to take a break. He spent a short time in Switzerland. Political events in France meant that Cauchy was now required to swear an oath of allegiance to the new regime, and when he failed to return to Paris to do so he lost all his positions there. He taught in Turin in 1832, and in Prague the following year.

Augustin Louis Cauchy
