Newton's Method Basins of Attraction
Newton's method is designed to find the roots of equations. Science is filled with examples of new problems suggested by techiques developed to solve other problems. Arthur Cayley recognized that if we already know the roots of a function, Newton's method suggests another problem:
which initial guesses iterate to which roots.
That is,
what are the basins of attraction of the roots?
We shall see this problem leads to fractals (no surprise at that), and also a simple experiment making an optical Sierpinski gasket using Christmas tree ornaments. Introducing the problem: finding the basins of attraction of the roots of z How much harder can it be to find the basins of attraction of the roots of z Here we illustrate how the basins change as the roots move The crinlky edges of the z basins illustrate fractal basin boundaries and the corresponding loss of predictability. The stirring together of basins on smaller and smaller scales illustrates the Wada property from topology.

Cayley-Purser Algorithm

This entry contributed by Scott Sutherland The Cayley-Purser algorithm is a public-key cryptography algorithm that relies on the fact that matrix multiplication is not commutative. It was devised by Sarah Flannery (then age 16), inspired by ideas of Michael Purser, for a Young Scientist competition in 1998. Flannery named the algorithm after Purser and Arthur Cayley (the inventor of matrices The Cayley-Purser algorithm uses only modular matrix multiplication instead of modular exponentiation, and os is much faster than other public-key algorithms for large moduli (e.g., about 20 times faster than RSA encryption for a 200-digit modulus). While the algorithm at first seemed to be as secure as RSA, it was subsequently shown that messages encrypted with this algorithm can be readily decrypted by knowledge of public data alone. Setup for the Cayley-Purser algorithm proceeds as follows.
1. Choose two large primes p and q , and let n = pq . The primes p and q should both be of the form , where is also prime.

Arthur Cayley's father Henry Cayley, although from a family who had lived for many generations in Yorkshire, England, lived in St Petersburg, Russia. It was in St Petersburg that Arthur spent the first eight years of his childhood before his parents returned to England and settled near London. As for everything else, so for a mathematical theory: beauty can be perceived but not explained. In J. R. Newman (ed.) The World of Mathematics, New York: Simon and Schuster, 1956. His genius showed itself at an early age. He published his first research paper while an undergraduate of 20, and the next year he published eight papers. While still in his early twenties, he originated the concept of n -dimensional geometry. After graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge, Cayley stayed on for three years as a tutor. At the age of 25, he began a 14-year career as a lawyer. During this period, he published approximately 200 mathematical papers, many of which are now classics. In 1863, Cayley accepted the newly established Sadlerian professorship of mathematics at Cambridge University. He spent the rest of his life in that position. One of his notable nonmathematical accomplishments was his role in the successful effor to have women admitted to Cambridge.
Among Cayley's many innovations in mathematics were the notions of an abstract group and a group algebra, and the matrix concept. He made major contributions to geometry and linear algebra. Cayley and his life-long friend and colaborator J. J. Sylvester were the founders of the theory of invariants, which was later to play an important role in the theory of relativity.

Chemical Graphs and Cambridge Euromug attendees may be interested in the fact that the famous mathematician, Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) worked at Trinity College, just a short walk from the hotel. Indeed one of the conference suites in the hotel is named after him. His work on algebraic matrices served as a foundation for Heisenberg's development of quantum chemistry in 1925. Of more direct relevance to attendees was his construction of "kenograms" ( A. Cayley Phil. Mag. (1874), 444) which were alkane tree graphs; these were used in the enumeration of the alkane structural isomers. Examples of these trees are shown in a picture reproduced from Dennis Rouvray's "The Origins of Chemical Graph Theory" ( Mathematical Chemistry 1(1991), 1-39). ( I am not sure what the semantics of * were in this particular release of the Daylight software Cayley was the first to employ generating functions in isomer enumeration work. In Rouvray's excellent history he goes on to describe how " he (Cayley), in 1857 (A. Cayley Phil. Mag. (1857), 172) had devised a method for enumerating rooted trees Using this function he succeeded in 1874 in enumerating unrooted trees which correspond to alkane molecules. He obtained isomer counts for alkanes up to the thirteenth member of the series, though his results for the latter two were shown to be erroneous. By 1875, Cayley had published a lengthy paper (A. Cayley, Rept. Brit. Assoc. Adv. Sci.
