Having secured their second term in office the Labour government have at the most another five years to fulfil their election promises.
Labour made the economy and improvements in the public sector the central issue of their campaign. Mr Blair pledged there would be no rise in the top or basic rate of income tax. Low inflation and mortgage rates were also key aspects of the Labour manifesto. Labour claimed they would recruit 20,000 more nurses, 10,000 more teachers and 6,000 extra police recruits. Do you think they will keep their promises? What other issues should top their agenda? We will be discussing the implications of the UK election this Sunday in a special Talking Point phone-in programme broadcast on BBC World Service Radio and on BBC News Online at 1500 BST (1400 GMT). If you would like to take part, please include a telephone number with your comments where we may contact you. This debate is now closed. Read a selection of your comments below.

But in our powers of cooperation, as in our powers of learning, we far surpass our fellow living creatures. Moreover we can consciously look at ourselves and see our imperfections. We can strive and learn to lessen them. This striving, this learning, can be lifelong for each one of us. For mankind as a whole, it can continue from generation to generation. Looking back to man's past, what development we see. We cannot probe the future, but humanly speaking we can rest our greatest hopes in this internal, this universal adventure in learning." Sir Sydney Chapman's successor to be named in March
Sir Sydney Chapman The Tory candidate earmarked to succeed Sir Sydney Chapman as MP for Chipping Barnet will be chosen in March. Sir Sydney announced last month that he will stand down at the next general election, after 24 years as Chipping Barnet MP. The Tories had imposed a ban on selection of general election candidates before the local elections in May, but Chipping Barnet won an exemption from Conservative Party chairman Theresa May. She has invited Barnet Conservatives to meet at central office this week to draw up a two-week timetable for the process. Stephen Payne, executive director of Barnet Conservatives , said: "The ban did not necessarily apply in circumstances where people had already announced they were going. We had to make a case to hold it sooner rather than later. We are relieved because we now know where we are going and can plan our fund-raising events around it." Keen contenders for the Chipping Barnet nomination include Greater London's Member of European Parliament Theresa Villiers, Camden councillor Sheila Gunn and Barnet councillor Katia David. Former Edmonton MP Dr Ian Twin and Barnet councillor Lynne Hillan are also considering whether to stand.

US bankrolls tobacco industry probe
By Sara Crowe Secrets of the tobacco industry in Australia and Asia will come under investigation with the help of a major grant awarded to a public health expert at the University. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US have awarded Professor Simon Chapman a total of almost $US817,000 or $A1.55 million over four years for his project, 'Analysis of tobacco industry documents: Asia and Australia'. "The project will be a social and political history of what the tobacco industry was doing, really since the 1960s. The documents go back a long way," said Professor Chapman. "It's also very relevant to today because you can see continuity between what they were doing in the past and what they're doing now." He said he would be looking in particular for evidence for and against the claim that tobacco companies knew cigarettes were addictive at the same time as they were trying to design products to optimise the number of people dependent on them. Professor Chapman has also won a $150,000 grant over three years from the National Health and Medical Research Council to study Australian documents in more detail.

Vacation Pictures from Australia
Corran and I were in his homeland of Australia from mid-May to mid-July of 2000. We had our formal wedding in Sydney and then went on a honeymoon around the Blue Mountains, Jenolan, and Canberra. We took tons of pictures, but this selection is the best and/or most interesting of the bunch. Well, some of it won't be so interesting to people who live down under, but for a newbie tourist like me kangaroos, the Opera House, and other Australian icons were neat to see. Yes, Corran and his family were very amused that I shot an entire roll of film on a couple of semi-wild kangaroos in Weston Park in Canberra. But if they were in Canada and saw beavers or bears, I'm sure they'd be snapping the pics. Of course, we were pretty close up to the kangaroos (not within kicking distance), and being that close to a semi-wild bear would probably be asking for severe pain, but that's another issue altogether. And for all the teasing about taking pictures of the Opera House, I'm sure most Aussie tourists in Toronto would be taking pictures of the CN Tower. The bird pictures here are all from the zoo, because the pictures of the wild birds at the park in Canberra are all too distant to see well online. But it was very cool to see what I consider exotic birds, the kind that fetch very high prices at North American pet stores, just flying around wild.
