Memories of
Albert Chapman
Australia's Greatest Mineral Collector A Tribute by Sir Howard Smith Australia's Greatest Mineral Collector, Albert Chapman passed away on July 20th 1996. His friend of many years Sir Howard Smith penned this tribute.
Sydney mineral collector Albert Chapman had the rare distinction of bestriding the years between the last of the great 19th century collectors and the advent of the great 20th century collectors who are still forming their collections in this second Golden Age of mineral collecting, which began about the middle of this century.
Albert Chapman and some of his beloved mineral specimens
(photo courtesy of QANTAS) The mineral curators of both museums helped Albert not only with specimens and advice, but they also inculcated into the young collector the mineral collecting lore of the times. Accordingly, Albert once crossed Sydney Harbour to call on perhaps the last and the greatest of the Australian 19th century collectors, George Smith. It was unfortunate that Albert called at a bad time, for George Smith was unwell and unable to give his visitor the time he most usually and willingly gave to those interested in the subject. Such a meeting between the leading Australian collectors of two centuries would have been some event to record. No Other Foundation, Vol. II. II. AMERICAN EVANGELISTS:
INTRODUCTION During the period 1864-1875 Churches of Christ in Australia were deeply influenced by a handful of American Evangelists. The membership grew, new initiatives were taken and conflict developed between British and American attitudes on a number of issues on which the sister movements differed. The source material in this chapter will relate, in turn, to the calling and activity of American evangelists, the work of later Colonial, British and American evangelists, the training by the Americans of local talent, conflict between British and American traditions, the calling of annual meetings, a local doctrinal issue, advocacy of Christian unity and the relationship of Churches of Christ to other religious groups. Additional material on the period can be found in the Jubilee History, in T. J. Brown (Ed.), Churches of Christ: A Historical, Biographical, and Pictorial History of Churches of Christ in the United States, Australasia, England and Canada (Louisville, J. P. Abstract
Methods Results Discussion ... Articles on similar material Abstract Objective: To evaluate compliance with a legislative ban on smoking inside restaurants by comparing smoking in Sydney restaurants (where it is legally banned) with smoking in Melbourne restaurants (not subject to a legal ban).
Design and participants: Unobtrusive observational study of restaurant patrons, and interviews with restaurant staff, carried out by 159 volunteers.
Setting: 78 Sydney restaurants with smoke-free indoor environments (as required by legislation) and 81 Melbourne restaurants not subject to legislation preventing smoking. The study took place from 20-31 October 2000.
Intervention: Legislation to ban smoking in indoor areas of restaurants was introduced in New South Wales in September 2000 (about six weeks before our study).
Outcomes: Observed incidents of smoking inside restaurants; staff attitudes to the ban; customer satisfaction as indicated by comments to staff; staff perceptions of restaurant patronage.

Medicine and the media Media milking of sacred cows: a heart-stopping tale Were there alternative frames that could have attracted journalistic interest in this trial? MJA In 1897, William Osler advised doctors not to "toy with the Delilah of the press". Despite researchers being generally delighted with journalists' translations of their work into news (few would disagree with Mae West that it's better to be looked over than overlooked), Osler's counsel sadly retains widespread support in the health professions. For too many, journalists spell trouble. Almost by definition, people in the midst of life-threatening medical emergencies, who may be unconscious, in shock, in extreme pain or delirious, surrender their normal sentient ability to consent. Health and medicine are rich with news value. Doctors are cast by the news media in many roles: for example, as medical miracle workers; as sages interpreting issues of contemporary morality; as intrepid, no-stone-unturned disease detectives; or as entrepreneurs.

About Albert Chapman
Albert Chapman was born in Mackay, Queensland in 1912. Albert's father was a sea captain and amateur naturalist, who often brought home natural history specimens such as sea shells and encouraged Albert to collect minerals. One of the first specimens in Albert's collection, gold in quartz, was given to him by his father. In the 1920s, aged 12, Albert collected rocks on the shores of the Parramatta River, Sydney, where he later lived, and became interested in the sparkling crystals they contained. He began to collect these specimens, some of which had been used in breakwaters and came from Prospect Quarry in western Sydney and others, like garnet gneiss from South America, which were ballast dumped from ships which anchored nearby. He later collected from the Prospect quarries, finding beautiful prehnite and other minerals. Albert trained as a cabinet maker and carpenter, later establishing a building business in Sydney, however collecting and trading minerals was the 'hobby' that dominated his life. Being a perfectionist in his craft as well as his hobby, ensured that Albert's collection was very special indeed. The mines of Broken Hill, with their incredible variety of fine mineral specimens, also attracted him at an early stage, and many collecting trips were made underground through contacts with mine managers and miners, who became firm friends.
