- In The Beginning -
There is very little written in the achives of Detectives between the 1840's and 1862. On the information of the New South Wales Police Department in 1862, a Dectectives Force was established as part of the Foot Police. The Officer in Charge was Sub-Inspector Charles Edward Harrison and his staff of twelve were:
First Class Detectives: Christopher Carnes
William Camphin
Alexander Thomas Scott
Patrick Lyons
George Scarlett
Charles Downham Second Class Detectives: Richard Elliott
William Clarke
John Rolston
Jason Swainson Alexander R. McMartin John Sanderson The newly formed Detectives were mostly involved in tracing missing persons, usually at the written request of relatives from England. Many of these inquiries evolved into murder investigations, the deceased having come to this country in search of gold and being 'done to death' on some lonely track in the New South Wales outback. The Wild Colonial Days also saw the Detectives despatched to the country areas to assist the mounted troopers in the search of the infamous 'Bushrangers' Ben Hall, Frank Gardiner, Andrew Scott, Thunderbolt and the Kelly Gang when they crossed into our State. These gangs heralded a new era of violence, finding easy security from Police in the mountains of the Great Dividing Range and further west in the remote pastoral areas. Detectives and Uniformed Police spent many a difficult and dangerous day tracking and ridding these offenders from the country districts of New South Wales. On the 19th November, 1979, the Detectives of the New South Wales Police Department were formed into a separate Branch, the C.I.B.

with Jan Chapman
by Rose Capp Rose Capp is co-editor of Senses of Cinema 's Special Women's Issue, film reviewer for The Melbourne Times and ABC Radio, 774 Melbourne, and a freelance writer on film. Jan Chapman is one of Australia's pre-eminent film producers. Her impressive list of producing credits include Two Friends (1986, TV), The Last Days of Chez Nous The Piano Love Serenade Holy Smoke Walk The Talk (2000) and Lantana (2001). On September 27 2002, she spoke with Rose Capp about life, film and her brilliant career. Rose Capp: Let's start with a straightforward question: How did you get involved in the film industry? Jan Chapman: When I was at university studying English and Fine Arts I met people who were making independent films, one of which included Phillip Noyce, who was my first husband. Then, I just got involved working on other people's films. It was very hands on, very 'pick up a camera, have an idea and express yourself'. At the time, Phil and people like Albie Thoms had started the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op; it was right at the beginning of all of that, in the late '60s. RC ]. One of the things about the Co-op was that they believed that you had to control the means of exhibition and distribution, which in fact I still believe!

Australia has one of the slackest voting systems in the Western world when it comes to ensuring there is no rorting yet no-one bothers to crack down on it. Crikey's vote-rigging expert Rory Rorter attended a fascinating conference recently which shed new light on a disturbing and little-discussed problem. March 04, 2001 At the Royal Victorian Historical Society's rooms in Melbourne on 3rd March, I attended my first Forum of the H. S . CHAPMAN SOCIETY on "VOTING FRAUD - THE PERILS AND PROBLEMS". The Society, established in 1997, is named after the Hon. Henry Samuel Chapman (1803-1881), defence barrister for the Eureka rebels and author of our original world-first secret ballot law. Its aims are, in brief, to promote the principles of fair elections in Australia, and identify the opportunity for, and the occurrence of, electoral fraud, malpractice and maladministration, and to promote legislative and administrative solutions to these problems. (Website: www.hschapman.org.au) The quality of the speakers at the Forum was very good. They were from a mixture of Labor and Coalition backgrounds, as were presumably the audience of about 25. We heard from the hugely impressive President, Sydney historian Dr Amy McGrath OAM, MA, PhD, author of several books including "The Forging of Votes" which describes, among other things, the battles fought by her husband and others in the Federated Ironworkers' Association in Sydney against Communist control of their Union.

The low-cost space race is on as private companies see big money in launching satellites and tourists into orbit. JOHN HUXLEY talked to some of the people turning dreams into machines. EVEN as a schoolboy, growing up in the far-off Sydney of the 1940s, Phil Chapman had a simple if ambitious career plan: to go from Parramatta High to sky-high by the fastest possible route. He studied the stars. He devoured the fantasies of the science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke and dreamt of turning them into fact. He wrote to the Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, warning him that the proposed Woomera rocket site in South Australia was pointed in the wrong direction for satellite launches. "Oh, yes, Menzies wrote back," Chapman recalls. "He thanked me for my interest, but reassured me - wrongly, as it happened, of course - that as satellites would not be required in the future, I was not to worry." Undeterred, Chapman had decided by age 14 that he wanted to be an astronaut. Since then, he has come tantalisingly close. After a distinguished academic career in Australia and the United States, he joined NASA as a scientist-astronaut. From Houston, he watched man walk on the moon. He was mission scientist for Apollo 14. He was shortlisted to go into space on Skylab II. ...
