The first ICCM'98 was held in 1998 with a great success of very high quality. Like ICCM 1998, this second congress, ICCM 2001, will have both plenary and invited addresses by distinguished researchers in every major fields, as well as contributed talks and poster sessions. Contributed papers on all major areas of mathematics are solicited. To make the congress a true worldwide gathering, all presentations will be given in English. This second congress, ICCM 2001, will be dedicated to Professor Shiing-Shen Chern for his 90th birthday.

Professor Shiing-Shen Chern
HOUSTON JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS
Editorial, Electronic Edition Vol. 28, No. 2, 2002 It gives us distinct pleasure to dedicate this issue to Professor Shiing-Shen Chern. Prof. Chern had been an editor of the Houston Journal of Mathematics from 1992 to 2000. His association with the Department of Mathematics involved yearly visits and stimulating lectures that began in 1988. He has collaborated with members of the department in publications and in organizing conferences. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor Emeritus of the University of Houston. Professor Chern is also Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, and Director Emeritus of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (M.S.R.I.). He is the founding father of three renowned institutes: the Institute of Mathematics of the Academia Sinica, the M.S.R.I., and the Nankai Institute of Mathematics. Professor Chern has rather broad but impeccable tastes in Mathematics. We have taken the liberty of singling out some areas in which he has made profound contributions: real and complex differential geometry, several complex variables, and Finsler geometry. The collection of papers that we have assembled in this issue comes from a small cross-section of mathematicians in whose careers Professor Chern has played a unique role. We are delighted, but not surprised, that the authors in question submitted their manuscripts with much enthusiasm. We hope this special issue will become a source of inspiration for many years to come.

NEWS RELEASE, 4/9/96
UC Berkeley mathematics alumnus uses 1995 California lottery winnings to endow annual campus professorship
by Robert Sanders Berkeley The California lottery paid off big time last year for UC Berkeley mathematics alumnus Bob Uomini, and now, thanks to his generosity, it's paying off for his old department as well. Uomini set aside money from the $22 million lottery jackpot he won last year to endow a visiting professorship in the Department of Mathematics in honor of mathematics professor Shiing-Shen Chern, who he credits for getting him into graduate school. To inaugurate the Shiing-Shen Chern Visiting Professorships, the department will host a half-day symposium in Chern's honor Thursday (April 11), featuring talks by the first Chern Visiting Professor, Sir Michael Atiyah of Cambridge University, as well as by Chern himself. The Chern Symposium will be held in the Arthur Andersen Auditorium, 295 Haas Business Building, from 2-5:30 p.m. Thursday. As a PhD mathematician Uomini knows full well the astronomical odds against winning the California lottery, but he considers the ten tickets he still purchases when the jackpot tops $10 million as an excuse for fantasizing. One of the few fantasies he indulged after winning was to endow a lectureship in honor of Chern, his favorite professor. "I loved his lectures," Uomini said. He found Chern's undergraduate course in differential geometry so exciting and stimulating that "by the end of the class I felt I wanted to become a differential geometer."

Speak at Chern Symposium
This year's Chern Visiting Professor, Frederich Hirzebruch, will be the featured speaker March 5, 6 and 7 at the third annual symposium held in honor of Professor Emeritus Shiing-Shen Chern, one of the century's great geometers. Hirzebruch is professor emeritus at Bonn University in Bonn, Germany, and served as director of the Max Planck Institute of Mathematics in Bonn from 1980 until his retirement in 1995. To begin the symposium, Chern will discuss "Projective Geometry" Thursday, March 5, at 2 p.m. Hirzebruch will follow at 4:10 p.m., speaking on "Why Do I Like Chern Classes?" This opening pair of lectures will be held in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engineering Center. Cosponsored by the Department of Mathematics and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, the symposium continues Friday, March 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the institute, 1000 Centennial Dr., above Lawrence Hall of Science. It continues Saturday, March 7, in 10 Evans from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For a complete schedule of symposium speakers, consult the institute's website at www.msri.org. The Chern Visiting Professorship, begun in 1996, honors the Berkeley professor emeritus widely regarded as the greatest geometer of his generation. For more than six decades, S.S. Chern has been a leader in the field of differential geometry and has made central contributions to such diverse areas as web geometry, integral geometry, complex manifolds, minimal submanifolds and characteristic classes.

At an advisory meeting of an advisory committee at the NSF, scientists from diverse disciplines were asked "What, in your discipline, could make for a quantum leap in achievement?" Committee member Irving Kaplansky replied: "For mathematics, found two new Institutes for Advanced Study–one in the Midwest, and one on the West Coast."
Quoting from Atkinson’s memo to the NSB: "American research in mathematics is today in a golden age. But there is within the mathematical community a general consensus that, in order to maintain and even further stimulate the unequalled pace of research of the past
professional organizations.
Letters from and conversations with many American mathematicians show agreement with the need for continued stimulation of mathematical research and with the concept of a research institute as an efficient and effective method of providing such stimulation.
RESOLVED that the national Science board approves the establishment of a Mathematical Sciences Research Institute; further, the Board approves of a Project Announcement and the general plans for the establishment of the Institute."

LECTURES ON CHERN-WEIL THEORY AND WITTEN DEFORMATIONS
by Weiping Zhang (Nankai Institute of Mathematics, Tianjin, P R China)
This invaluable book is based on the notes of a graduate course on differential geometry which the author gave at the Nankai Institute of Mathematics. It consists of two parts: the first part contains an introduction to the geometric theory of characteristic classes due to Shiing-shen Chern and André Weil, as well as a proof of the Gauss–Bonnet–Chern theorem based on the Mathai–Quillen construction of Thom forms; the second part presents analytic proofs of the Poincaré–Hopf index formula, as well as the Morse inequalities based on deformations introduced by Edward Witten.
Contents:
  • Chern–Weil Theory for Characteristic Classes
  • Bott and Duistermaat–Heckman Formulas
  • Gauss–Bonnet–Chern Theorem
  • Poincaré–Hopf Index Formula: An Analytic Proof
  • Morse Inequalities: An Analytic Proof
  • Thom–Smale and Witten Complexes
  • Atiyah Theorem on Kervaire Semi-characteristic

Readership: Graduate students and researchers in differential geometry, topology and mathematical physics.
