Tensor analysis
The mathematical language of general relativity is tensor analysis. Tensor analysis deals with geometric invariants, and this is done by describing the geometry independent of coordinates. To illustrate the idea, think of a surface. The surface has an existence independent of our choice of coordinates, and intrinsic quantities like curvature and geodesic curves should be left unchanged by any coordinate transformation. The description of these quantities is the goal of tensor analysis. In the development of this theory, four names take a special place. First the foundation was established by Elwin Bruno Christoffel, heavily relying on the ideas of Riemann. Luigi Bianchi built further on this work, and in particular he studied the properties of surfaces. The final formulation of the theory was however the work of Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro (usually only known as Ricci) and his student Tullio Levi-Civita.

APPLICATIONS of HARMONIC FUNCTIONS Section 10.9 Schwarz-Christoffel Transformation To proceed further, we must review the rotational effect of a conformal mapping w=f(z) at a point Many applications involving conformal mappings require the construction of a one-to-one conformal mapping from the upper half plane onto a domain G in the w-plane where the boundary consists of straight line segments. Let P be a polygon in the w plane with vertices and exterior angles , where , for . There exists a one-to-one conformal mapping from the upper half plane onto G that satisfies the boundary conditions
The derivative is

Math Lab The Mathematics Laboratory, "Math lab" as it is referred to by both teachers and students alike, is a tutorial service offered by the teachers. This service is provided before school, during lunch, and after school several days a week. The purpose of math lab is to provide a place where students may work on their homework, receive additional instruction, or clarify their understanding of material covered in class. It also allows the student to work with a teacher in a one on one setting. See the schedule for 1997-'98 below. Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.
