Goats History ... Views of The Juan Fernandez Islands ..... on the 9th of June, at day-break, we at last discovered the long-wished for Island of Juan Fernandes. And with this discovery I shall close this chapter and the first book, after observing (which will furnish a very strong image of our unparalleled distresses) that by our suspecting ourselves to be to the westward of the Island on the 28th of May, and, in consequence of this, standing in for the Main, we lost between seventy and eighty of our men, whom we should doubtless have saved had we made the Island that day, which, had we kept on our course for a few hours longer, we could not have failed to have done.
A plan of the N.E. side of the Island, containing these three bays, drawn by a large scale, is here inserted, where it appears, that Cumberland Bay is pretty well secured to the southward, lying only exposed from the N. by W. to the E. by S ; and as the northerly winds seldom blow in that climate, and never with any violence, the danger from that quarter is not worth attending to. To distinguish this bay the better at sea, I have added a very exact view of it, which will enable all future Navigators readily to find it

For February, we will make a foray into science fiction and read "The Sparrow" by Mary Doria Russell. In 2019, humanity finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible mission to Rakhat, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being "human." Join us for a discussion of this startling and compelling novel. Denver Falcons
The Denver Falcons were the first professional hockey team to grace the state of Colorado. Their first and only year here was eventful. A car crash took the life of one player and seriously injured another, the team almost instigated a riot in an away game, but through all that, the Falcons played competitive hockey all through the season. The competitive nature of the USHL was constantly evident as game-to-game the standings could change radically. Basically, the Denver Falcons were transplants from Minneapolis. Many of the players played for the USHL Minneapolis Millers the year before.
Bill Cook, who was considered one of the best right wings ever to play in the NHL, was named head coach July 22, 1950. Cook was head coach and manager of the Millers for the previous four years and had been chief scout for the Cleveland Baron of the American Hockey League.
The team broke from training camp on October 9, 1950. Players such as, George Agar (44 goals the year before for the Millers), Billy Warwick and rookie defenseman Bob Chrystal were considered strong points on a very tough team.
"I am certain that the Falcons will be a definite title contender. Denver is one of the top sports towns in the nation and the fans deserve only the best team that can be assembled," General Manager Lyle Wright said about the Falcons in an Oct 9, 1951 Rocky Mountain News column.

But it always seems to struggle in the conference tournament. The Colonials broke that jinx March 10, when they knocked off Rhode Island, 56-49, in the Atlantic 10 championship game in Washington, D.C. Ugo Oha finished with 26 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks to guarantee George Washington (24-6), which has won nine straight and 20 of its past 21, an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It is the Colonials' 10th NCAA appearance in 13 years, but this was their first tournament championship since 1996. "This is the icing on the cake," Oha said. "We worked really hard in preseason, and changed our attitude and focus in practice. Coach is right; if you practice hard, the game is easy for you. It made a difference in getting us to the Promised Land."
