Clifford, William Kingdon
(b. May 4, 1845, Exeter, Devon, Eng.d. March 3, 1879, Madeira Islands, Portugal), British philosopher and mathematician who developed the theory of biquaternions (a generalization of the Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton's theory of quaternions) and then linked them with more general associative algebras. Clifford was educated at King's College, London, and at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was elected a fellow of the latter in 1868. In 1871 he was named professor of mathematics at University College, London. Three years later he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London. Influenced by the non-Euclidean geometries of Bernhard Riemann and Nikolay Lobachevsky, Clifford wrote "On the Space-Theory of Matter" (1870). He presented the idea that matter and energy are simply different types of curvature of space, thus foreshadowing Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. In addition, he used biquaternions to study motion in non-Euclidean spaces and certain closed Euclidean manifolds (surfaces), now known as "spaces of Clifford-Klein." He showed that spaces of constant curvature could have several different topological structures and proved the topological equivalence of a

William Kingdom Clifford, mathematician and gymnast
Clifford invented Clifford algebras, and also proposed (without much detail) that the forces of nature should be looked at as due to the curvature of space. He attended King's College London, and so was our best student ever. He entered at 15 and went to Cambridge at 18; he was probably registered at King's College School, but attended the university programme instead of that of the school. He died in Madeira of comsumption, and was carried back by his wife to be buried in Highgate Cemetry. See the short article, by Hanna Nencka and J.-P. Bourguignon, xv-xvi in "Geometry and Nature", Contemporary mathematics , (Amer Math Soc) 1997. This is the proceedings of the Madeira Conference in honour of W. K. Clifford, in which my paper [118] , 1997, appears. Go to my HOME PAGE for more links.

Some chronologically ordered remarks about the relation of algebra and geometry. Quite incomplete and subjective!

Euclid of Alexandria (~325BC-~265BC)
Euclid has had the most serious impact on mathematics. His collection The Elements have not only settled the state of the art in geometry for nearly two thousand years, but provided also the mere syntax of mathematics: Definition, Theorem, Proof.
Euclid himself is not yet rigorous in his mathematical arguments. But his style of presenting mathematics was throughout accepted. The first sentence of Vol I (of XIII books) starts without any ado and explanation by the definition of a point: A point is what has no parts . Where after some further definition he states theorems and provides proofs.
The elements of Euclid deal with plane and space geometry of ordinary three space. His arguments are given by geometric constructions and he may be seen as the founder of synthetic geometry, which is non-algebraic in its arguments and presentation. This is a great deal since algebraic restrictions to geometric settings can be avoided in this approach, what, however, Euclid did not made use of. history of mathematics -> Euclid

http://brindedcow.umd.edu/236/cliffordandjames.html
Notes on W.K. Clifford and William James Though the essays we have in our text are by William James, the second of these, "The Will to Believe," is in many ways a response to W.K. Clifford's essay "The Ethics of Belief," and so we will discuss both authors. We begin with a brief account of Clifford's essay, and then move to a discussion of William James's classic The Will to Believe W.K. Clifford's essay is called The Ethics of Belief , and for good reason. He wants to convince us that forming our beliefs in the right way is a matter of real ethical importance. Thus, he begins with an example where the connection between belief and ethical considerations seems very strong: the ship-owner knows that his ship might need to be overhauled. Before the ship leaves port, however, he talks himself out of his doubts. He reminds himself that the ship has sailed safely many times before. He reminds himself that he believes in Providence. And he persuades himself not to distrust the shipbuilders and contractors who have worked on the boat in the past. The ship sinks in mid-ocean and all aboard it die.

    • Geometric Algebras (Clifford algebras) in Physics : Paravectors in the relatively simple geometric algebra of physical space (APS) represent spacetime vectors and generate a covariant algebra for relativity that is isomorphic to the Pauli algebra (the algebra of Pauli spin matrices, also isomorphic to complex quaternions). They provide quantum-like tools such as spinors and projectors in classical relativistic physics that are not only powerful computational tools, but also offer intriguing.views of the classical/quantum interface and fresh approaches to Dirac theory and elementary fermions in flat and curved spacetimes.
