Teaching Courses and Curricula
Tape 6, Side B NATHAN: You were beginning to speak of the courses that you taught. STRONG: Yes, I had three courses. Introduction to philosophy: this was a course which several members of the faculty offered. In fact, it was the policy of the department to have a lower division course be offered by every member of the faculty, as far as needed to care for enrollment. History of philosophy was taught by some members of the faculty, logic by others. Introduction to philosophy was, by far, the largest course in terms of enrollment. There would be three or four of us teaching this course, with enrollment size running from 125 to 300 and even more students. NATHAN: Now, this was not intended for those who were going to major in philosophy? STRONG: If you were going on in philosophy, there were two required courses: history of philosophy and logic. Introduction to philosophy was like a general humanities course, and we taught it as such. And, of course, one had a teaching assistant, two assistants, and even three assistants, depending on class size. As had been the case at City College with Overstreet's course, I met with the teaching assistants. They attended the lectures. I prepared the examinations with the advice of the teaching assistants. So the course was similar to the course that I had been engaged in teaching as an assistant at City College, with one very important difference. We taught the introduction to philosophy from primary writings; we used no secondary texts. The course at Berkeley was a far superior course to the one that Overstreet had taught at City College.

BURGER KING PREDICTS WHOPPING JAPAN BIZ
Also attending the luncheon briefing were Burger King Japan Co., Ltd., President Yuji Kagohashi, Senior Vice President David Fitzjohn and Directors Gus Gelardi and Tetsuji Kanamori. Burger King Japan is a 50-50 joint venture set up by Japan Tobacco Inc. and Grand Metropolitan PLC, and is currently undergoing a rapid growth in Japan as more than 100 Morinaga Love hamburger restaurants are being converted to Burger King establishments.
Recently converted Tokyo outlets include those in Minato-ku, Ikebukuro, Harajuku, Shiba, Ochanomizu, Isezaki-cho in Yokohama, Nakano, Yotsugi, Shibaura Kodaimae, Gakugeidaigaku and Kita Senju.
Lowes, asked about the wisdom of entering the Japanese market at such a late date compared with competitors such as McDonald's and Wendy's, said he has complete confidence that Burger King's taste will soon become a big favorite of Japanese burger lovers, and his company would be Japan's most preferred hamburger chain, a status it enjoys in America.
Pointing out that many Burger King restaurants in North America are located adjacent to a McDonald's and/or a Wendy's, Lowes said, "I can go right in and open a store next to the others and know I'm going to do a good a business without fear of saturation."

Contents Back Chapter II Home Exmouth Edward Pellew - By Parkinson, C. Northcote, London, 1934 CHAPTER I - Background We have . . . to boast of splendid instances of men who went to sea at the age of twelve and thirteen, who by self-education rendered themselves ornaments to our Profession, and worthy of bearing comparison with the most distinguished statesmen and diplomatists of the age; namely, Lord St. Vincent, Lord Nelson, Lord Collingwood, Lord Exmouth, Sir Richard Keats, Sir George Cockburn - cum multis aliis. Sir T. Byam Martin. THE name Pellew is Cornish, and like a number of Cornish names it is traditionally derived from the French. The pronunciation of the name Pellew, in which the first ' e ' is short, and the accent on the second syllable, makes the derivation from some French names spelt 'Pelleu' or 'Pellieu' probable. To set against this, several early variations of the spelling seem rather to suggest a purely Cornish origin. But if the connexion of the family with St. Aubayne

CCI Space Shuttle Coverage wins Emmy
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fl., May 17, 1999 - Communications Concepts, Inc. (CCI), an audio visual communications company, with headquarters in Cape Canaveral was part of the team that was honored with an Emmy Award at the 35th Annual Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards. The Award was given to recognize the outstanding team effort involved in covering an event that does not happen everyday and effects a large segment of the community. The Emmy was given to CCI’s client, WBNS – Ohio News Network, for coverage of STS-95 John Glenn Launch at an awards gala at The Museum Center at Cincinnati's Union Terminal. In his award acceptance speech, David Sirak, News Operations Manager for WBNS, thanked the entire team of over 170 talented people for their contributions and specifically thanked the crew of Communications Concepts “without them this wouldn’t have happened.” Communications Concepts produced live coverage of the Glenn Launch for WBNS providing crews, staging, set, a multi-camera production truck, microwave truck and satellite uplink truck. Coverage from Kennedy Space Center started weeks before the launch with Space Shuttle Rollout and Astronaut arrival. Launch week coverage included live reports for morning, mid-day, prime and late newscasts. To accomplish this, CCI provided two sixteen-person crews that allowed WBNS to shoot and edit from 4:00 AM until 1:00 AM daily. KSC coverage by CCI included not only reports from the Shuttle Press Site, but also from Astronauts Hall of Fame – Space Camp. Coverage by CCI concluded with the Space Shuttle landing at KSC. This was the second time CCI Shuttle Launch coverage had been nominated for an Emmy. CCI had been previously nominated for its work for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
