Popular Music
Having spent more than twenty years as a performer, manager, and producer of African music, John Collins brings an insider's perspective and a personal passion to this account of popular music in West Africa. He explores the roots of the various styles and genres and the "feedback" of black music adapted to the New World and returning to Africa to reinfluence its origins. Collins celebrates the personalities and sounds of today's music, its influence on an international audience, the African music business, and the cross-fertilization between African music and that of other cultures. Interspersed with his rich descriptions and historical narratives are colorful biographical sketches of important African musicians along with a wealth of rare photographs of individuals and bands. With the intention of exposing "the inner driving forces of popular music in Africa," Collins delves into the history of African music, traces its evolution throughout the twentieth century, and explores the current "world beat" explosion. He demonstrates that the enormous energy generated by African music is in part a result of its polyrhytmic nature and rhythmic spacing, "the hot sounds and the cool space." He describes the complexities of African rhythms: the cross-beats, the inside rhythm, the varying tempo, the positive and negative sound, and the rhythmic dialogue. "African music," Collins observes, "is a gestalt of opposites that unifies the up and down-beat, head and feet, the audience and performer, into the communion of the beat.... There is no separation, only universal 'togetherness.'"

John Collins/Seven
Exhibition review by Thomas Baker
From Oriental Rug Review, Vol. 13/3
The grapevine started to buzz before the holidays. From Washington, Omaha, Los Angeles, Houston, and Pittsburgh, I got the word: John Collins is hanging another show. His seventh, this was entitled "Mostly Afshar... An Exhibition and Sale of Small South Persian Weavings." As I had not seen John's new gallery in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and since the show dates conveniently coincided with the Skinner auction in Bolton, there was no question that I would attend.
No. 1, an Afshar sofreh, 3'10x3'8", has to rank as one of the great 19th century masterpieces from this tribe.
Stopping first at the Skinner preview, I heard nothing but unqualified praise for John's efforts. In truth, this hardly comes as a surprise. Beginning in 1977, Collins was one of the first people to explore in depth this group of tribal rugs, his interest has not waned, and today he is probably one of the most knowledgeable individuals in this field. I could hardly wait to get to Newburyport. The next morning I arrived and understood what the excitement was all about. The focus and depth of the show was visually stunning. The weavings were selected from four basic design categories: Herati, Boteh, Ascending Motifs, and Central Medallion. Attractively hung in groups, they provided an opportunity to examine and compare similarities and differences, which was fascinating. All the South Persian tribal groups were represented, and it was intriguing to see variations in design, technique, materials, and rendering amongst the same ethnic groups juxtaposed against other groups.

COLLINS, JOHN CHURTON
continued to be a solace to him amidst the privations to which the life of a seaman must ever be subject. As captain of the “Barfleur,” Collingwood was present at the naval engagement which was fought on the 1st of June 1794; and on that occasion he displayed equal judgment and courage. On board the “Excellent” he shared in the victory of the i4th of February 1797, when Sir John Jervis (Lord St Vincent) humbled the Spanish fleet off Cape St Vincent. His conduct in this engagement was the theme of universal admiration throughout the fleet, and greatly advanced his fame as a naval officer. After blockading Cadiz for some time, he returned for a few weeks to Portsmouth to repair. In the beginning of 1799 Collingwood was raised to the rank of vice-admiral, and hoisting his flag in the “ Triumph,” he joined the Channel Fleet, with which he proceeded to the Mediterranean, where the principal naval forces of France and Spain were assembled. Collingwood continued actively employed in watching the enemy, until the peace of Amiens restored him once more to the bosom of his family. tion of the British ships, as well as of those which were captured from the enemy. He wa’s raised to the peerage as Baron Collingwood of Coldburne and Heathpool, and received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, with a pension of £2000 per annum.
