Algebraic Noncommutative Geometry formulation Here is the introduction to my May 2002 Cookeville Clifford Algebra talk John Baez , in his week 175 , says: "... a von Neumann algebra simple von Neumann algebras "factors" for short. Anyway, the point is that we just need to classify the factors: the process of sticking these together to get the other von Neumann algebras is not tricky. The first step in classifying factors was done by von Neumann and Murray , who divided them into types I, II, and III This doubles the trace, so define a new trace on the algebra of 2 x 2 matrices which is half the usual one. Now keep doing this, doubling the dimension each time, using the above formula to define a map from the 2^n x 2^n matrices into the 2^(n+1) x 2^(n+1) matrices, and normalizing the trace on each of these matrix algebras so that all the maps are trace-preserving. Then take the union of all these algebras... and finally, with a little work, complete this and get a von Neumann algebra

Il a obtenu la médaille Field, l'équivalent du Prix Nobel pour les Mathématiques, en 1982. Il est professeur au Collège de France et chercheur à l'IHES. Il aime la sérénité que procure les longs calculs algébriques. Alain Connes : Il y a une incroyable présence de l'intuition, il y a une incroyable présence de ce que l'on appelle en anglais " hunch " c'est-à-dire si vous voulez du fait que l'on sent qu'il y a quelque chose qui est présent et qu'on essaie de l'attraper, et ça c'est pas vraiment rationnel, c'est quelque chose qui implique des sentiments si on veut, qui font partie de la vie réelle, pas du tout quelque chose de sec, de desséché abstrait et tout ça, pas du tout. Je comprendrais beaucoup plus facilement que le côté solitude soit plus pénible en art, pour la raison simple si vous voulez que l'art doit être sanctionné par l'approbation d'un large public pour que la beauté, enfin ce qui est censé être la beauté, soit appréciée. A l'inverse, en mathématiques, la sanction, c'est l'effort lui-même, c'est d'avoir trouvé ou pas et ça, personne ne peut nous le voler c'est impossible, c'est-à-dire que lorsqu'on a trouvé quelque chose qui sort de l'ordinaire, le plaisir qu'on a au moment où on le trouve se suffit par lui-même, c'est tout, et il ne demande pas de sanction par la société, ça, on n' en a rien à faire finalement.
