Chapter 25 is devoted to the Game of Life.
John Horton Conway, Richard K. Guy. The Book of Numbers . Copernicus / Springer. 1996
Review:
This wonderful book is crammed with fascinating facts and properties about every kind of number. Many of the properties are given a geometric interpretation, so there are plenty of marvelous diagrams. Even if you've come across the material before, this geometric and diagrammatic approach may give you a new perspective on things - for example, I was particularly taken with the 'telegraph pole' representation of infinite ordinals in the last chapter. Many more weighty presentations tend to be short on diagrams. I think this is a pity: although 'proof by diagram' is rarely sound, and nearly always needs to be backed up by a symbolic proof, diagrams themselves can do much to help prime the intuition.

Search What is the Game of Life? by Paul Callahan The Game of Life (or simply Life) is not a game in the conventional sense. There are no players, and no winning or losing. Once the "pieces" are placed in the starting position, the rules determine everything that happens later. Nevertheless, Life is full of surprises! In most cases, it is impossible to look at a starting position (or pattern ) and see what will happen in the future. The only way to find out is to follow the rules of the game. Play Life Now! [no button] Draw a pattern on the grid and click "Go". Applet help Applet by Alan Hensel Rules of the Game of Life Life is played on a grid of square cellslike a chess board but extending infinitely in every direction. A cell can be live or dead . A live cell is shown by putting a marker on its square. A dead cell is shown by leaving the square empty. Each cell in the grid has a neighborhood consisting of the eight cells in every direction including diagonals. To apply one step of the rules, we count the number of live neighbors for each cell. What happens next depends on this number.

MATHEMATICAL GAMES
The fantastic combinations of John Conway's new solitaire game "life"
by Martin Gardner Scientific American 223 (October 1970): 120-123. Most of the work of John Horton Conway , a mathematician at Gonville and Caius College of the University of Cambridge , has been in pure mathematics. For instance, in 1967 he discovered a new groupsome call it "Conway's constellation"that includes all but two of the then known sporadic groups. (They are called "sporadic" because they fail to fit any classification scheme.) Is is a breakthrough that has had exciting repercussions in both group theory and number theory. It ties in closely with an earlier discovery by John Conway of an extremely dense packing of unit spheres in a space of 24 dimensions where each sphere touches 196,560 others. As Conway has remarked, "There is a lot of room up there." In addition to such serious work Conway also enjoys recreational mathematics. Although he is highly productive in this field, he seldom publishes his discoveries. One exception was his paper on "Mrs. Perkin's Quilt," a dissection problem discussed in "Mathematical Games" for September, 1966. My topic for July, 1967, was sprouts, a topological pencil-and-paper game invented by Conway and M. S. Paterson. Conway has been mentioned here several other times. This month we consider Conway's latest brainchild, a fantastic solitaire pastime he calls "life". Because of its analogies with the rise, fall and alternations of a society of living organisms, it belongs to a growing class of what are called "simulation games"games that resemble real-life processes. To play life you must have a fairly large checkerboard and a plentiful supply of flat counters of two colors. (Small checkers or poker chips do nicely.) An Oriental "go" board can be used if you can find flat counters that are small enough to fit within its cells. (Go stones are unusable because they are not flat.) It is possible to work with pencil and graph paper but it is much easier, particularly for beginners, to use counters and a board.

John Conway, F.R.S. Mathematics Department Princeton University John H. Conway is von Neumann Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University. Educated at Cambridge University, he served on the Mathematics faculty there prior to joining Princeton in 1986. He is one of the preeminent theorists in the study of finite groups (the mathematical abstraction of symmetry) and one of the world's foremost knot theorists. In his many books and journal articles he has broken new ground in number theory, game theory, coding theory, tiling, and the creation of new number systems. The system of "Surreal Numbers" which he invented is the subject of a popular book by computer scientist Donald Knuth. Beyond the academic world Conway is widely known as the inventor of the "Game of Life". He may well have the distinction of having more books, articles and Web pages devoted to his creations than any other living mathematician.

John Horton Conway
"Creador del juego llamado Life.

Conway chose his rules carefully, after a long period of experimentation, to meet three desiderata:

He's a familiar face with a new title.
John Conway, former director of career services in the School and a 1985 graduate, returned in January as assistant dean for distance education and executive education.
Though he has been back for only a short while, he already is reaching out to journalism professionals to expand the executive education program.
"We're constantly looking for ideas that are relevant that professionals have commented to us that they would like to see as part of our program," Conway said. "Many of them are skills-based."
In addition to overseeing the School's executive education program, Conway has been charged with the task of developing an online distance education program.
