Korte biografie Antoine Augustin Cournot A ntoine Augustin Cournot werd in 1801 te Grey in Frankrijk geboren. Hij was een bekend wiskundige en filosoof. Voor de economische wetenschap is Cournot zeer belangrijk geweest, omdat hij als een van de eersten op systematische manier de wiskunde op economische verschijnselen heeft toegepast. Zijn naam is onafscheidelijk verbonden aan de theoretische verhandeling van het monopolie, waarbij de monopolist naar maximale winst streeft. Het punt op de prijsafzetcurve wordt daarom dan ook het punt van Cournot genoemd. In zijn boek uit 1838, "Recherches sur les principes mathématiques de la théorie des richesses" geeft Cournot een wiskundige verhandeling over het homogeen duopolie, waarbij twee aanbieders van mineraalwater met elkaar concurreren. Vervolgens laat hij het aantal aanbieders oneindig groot worden, zodat de situatie van volkomen concurrentie onstaat. Met zijn behandeling van de onvolkomen concurrentie is cournot zijn tijd honderd jaar vooruit geweest (2 Cournot overleed in 1877 in Parijs.

Antoine Augustin Cournot Cournot, Antoine , nasceu na cidade de Gray na França, foi à Escola Secundária no Collège de Gray entre os anos de 1809 e 1816. Ele logo mostrou interesse por política e ainda jovem com a França dividida entre monarquistas e republicanos, ele ficou do lado da monarquia quando jovem. Depois de sair da escola ele passou quatro anos em um escritório de advocacia mas depois de ter lido Laplace e a correspondência entre Leibniz e Clarke ele decidiu entrar na Universidade. Um curso preliminar de matemática no Collège Royal em Besancon durante 1820-21 o preparou para entrar na Ecole Normale Supérieur em Paris na qual ele entrou em 1821. Entretanto seu tempo foi perdido assim que a Ecole Normale Supérieur foi fechada. Cournot permaneceu em Paris e, junto com seu amigo também estudante Dirichlet, ensinou matemática na Sourbonne. Em 1823 Cournot tornou-se tutor mas continuou com seus trabalhos em matemática recebendo seu doutorado em 1829 pela tese Le mouvement d'un corps rigide soutenu par un plan fixe . Poisson ficou impressionado com Cournot e, em 1833, ele obteve uma posição com a Academia em Paris. Durante este tempo ele traduziu tratado de astronomia de John Herschel para o francês, e o publicou em 1834.

Antoine Augustin Cournot, 1801-1877 Cournot es el matemático que inició la sistematización formal de la ciencia económica. Estudió en la Escuela Normal Superior de París donde se licenció en Ciencias en 1823. Catedrático de Análisis Matemático en la Universidad de Lyon en 1834. Rector de la Academia de Dijon de 1854 a 1862. A pesar de haber trabajado toda su vida en universidades, tan sólo dedicó un año a la docencia, siendo su actividad principal la gestión administrativa universitaria y la investigación. Cournot fue el primero en proponer la utilización de funciones matemáticas para describir categorías económicas tales como la demanda, la oferta o el precio. Analiza con especial atención los mercados monopolistas, estableciendo el punto de equilibrio del monopolio, llamado el punto de Cournot. Es también pionero en el estudio del duopolio y el oligopolio Sus aportaciones influyeron notablemente sobre los marginalistas, Jevons Walras y Marshall , de los que puede ser considerado un precursor. Produjo también notables contribuciones al campo estadístico.
