ABSTRACT: The publication of Russell's The Principles of Mathematics (1903) and Couturat's Les principes des mathematiques (1905) incited several prominent neo-Kantians to make up their mind about the logicist program. In this paper, I shall discuss the critiques presented by the following neo-Kantians: Paul Natorp, Ernst Cassirer and Jonas Cohn. They argued that Russell's attempt to deduce the number concept from the class concept is a petitio principii . Russell replied that the sense in which every object is 'one' must be distinguished from the sense in which 'one' is a number. I claim that Russell was wrong in dismissing the neo-Kantian argument as an elementary logical error. To accept Russell's distinction would be to accept at least part of Russell's logicist program. The expression 'a class with one member' would presuppose the number 'one' only if one simultaneously accepted the analysis which mathematical logic provides for it (the class u has one member when u is not null and 'x and y are us' implies 'x and y are identical'). My point is that the aforementioned analysis provided by mathematical logic was something that the neo-Kantians were not ready to accept.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ido is a "reformed" version of the constructed language Esperanto . It was developed in the early , and still has a small following today, primarily in Europe Ido inherits many of the same grammatical features of Esperanto, and in many cases the vocabulary is similar. Ido shares with Esperanto the goals of grammatical simplicity and consistency, ease of learning, and the use of loanwords from various European languages. However, certain changes were introduced to address some of the concerns that had arisen about Esperanto. These include:
    • Esperanto's alphabet uses six new letters, three of which are not found in any existing language; as a result, Esperanto in typing and in internet e-mail and newsgroups frequently resorts to any of several schemes to represent these special letters. This leads to the situation where the same word may be displayed any of several different ways. Ido addresses this issue by using the 26-letter English alphabet.

Conversational Maxims and Principles of Language Planning
    Hartmut Traunmüller
The following text has only been published in the working papers PERILUS XII (1991), pp. 25-47 (Department of linguistics, Stockholm university). ABSTRACT
    1. Introduction
Johann Martin Schleyer's Volapük of 1879 and Ludwik Lazar Zamenhof's Lingvo Internacia of 1887, known as Esperanto, were the first artificial interlanguages that succeeded in attracting a considerable number of users. When these languages were constructed, the question how a language should be constituted in order to serve as an efficient means of communication can hardly be said to have been treated satisfactorily by linguists. In the 17th century, several philosophers such as Descartes, Leibniz, and Komensky had been concerned with the deliberate construction of a "perfected" language. These attempts resulted in the creation of several artificial languages, among which the philosophical language of bishop John Wilkins (1661) is the most elaborated example. The concern of those scholars was, however, not so much the ordinary communicative function of language, but rather its pedagogical use. Grice observed that conversations, like other human interactions, are governed by a cooperative principle, telling that you should "make your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged". This implies, i.a., that you need not and should not supply information which you can assume that your audience already has - just as suggested by the principles of necessity and sufficiency.

English translation by Don HARLOW Sinjoro kaj kara Majstro, Sir and dear Master, Ni dankas vin pro viaj prudentaj konsiloj, kaj ni des pli inklinas sekvi ilin, æar ili estas tute konformaj al niaj intencoj kaj al nia plano... We thank you for your prudent advice, and we are the more inclined to follow it because it is in complete agreement with our intentions and our plan... ...Unnecessary to state that the Committee would not use the clumsy formulas that you fear, but only one formula which would clearly indicate that "there is only one single language, which could serve to..., and which might be recommended to..." About the hypothesis that our Committee might in principle accept another language than Esperanto, allow me to not even consider it, because it is very improbable, or more correctly impossible. It would be necessary for us to have chosen the members of our Committee very poorly, or for them all to be perfect comedians, for their decision not to be the one that you want just as we do.

This list includes names of persons Peirce sent letters to and/or received letters from, either probably or certainly, and names of people who wrote letters concerning Peirce, a few of which Peirce had copies of, that have been retrieved in different archives. The list also includes names of institutions. We strongly wish that readers interested in this list would look for a number of the names in their local archives in the hope of finding new Peirce-related letters. We expect that thousands of letters by Peirce still survive in unsearched archives both in the U.S. and abroad. Please join the effort in their recovery!
