The Development of Analysis on the Continent
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. L'Hospital Varignon De Montmort Nicole ... Fagnano Leaving for a moment the English mathematicians of the first half of the eighteenth century we come next to a number of continental writers who barely escape mediocrity, and to whom it will be necessary to devote but few words. Their writings mark the steps by which analytical geometry and the differential and integral calculus were perfected and made familiar to mathematicians. Nearly all of them were pupils of one or other of the two elder Bernoullis, and they were so nearly contemporaries that it is difficult to arrange them chronologically. The most eminent of them are Cramer de Gua De Montmort Fagnano l'Hospital Nicole Parent Riccati Saurin , and Varignon
L'Hospital
, born in Paris in 1661, and died there on Feb. 2, 1704, was among the earliest pupils of John Bernoulli, who, in 1691, spent some months at l'Hospital's house in Paris for the purpose of teaching him the new calculus. It seems strange, but it is substantially true, that a knowledge of the infinitesimal calculus and the power of using it was then confined to Newton, Leibnitz, and the two elder Bernoullis - and it will be noticed that they were the only mathematicians who solved the more difficult problems then proposed as challenges. There was at that time no text-book on the subject, and the credit of putting together the first treatise which explained the principles and use of the method is due to l'Hospital; it was published in 1696 under the title

    Cramer's Rule
Cramers rule is a formula for solving systems of equations by determinants.  Cramer's rule states that the solutions for ax + cy=e and bx+dy=f are given by the determinant solutions     Here you can find a proof of this theorem by the method of vector cross products (alternative products) . The link above also has a java script applet that may help you to visualize the vector solution.
The Cramer of the rule is Gabriel Cramer (1704-1752), a Swiss mathematician who was a professor of mathematics at Geneva. When Cramer published his rule in 1750 he did not use determinants as they are now shown, and he gave no explanation for how he achieved the result. It seems that Colin Maclaurin probably discovered the same rule as early as 1729, but it was not published until after his death. Although Cramer is primarily remembered for the rule of determinants above he also worked in problems related to physics and general geometry and algebraic curves.
One unusual curve on which he worked is called the Devil's curve.  The formula, in cartesian form is given by

    Gabriel Cramer (1704-1752)

    Cramer's rule
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Cramer's rule is a theorem in linear algebra , which gives the solution of a system of linear equations in terms of determinants Computationally, it is generally inefficient and thus not used in practical applications which may involve many equations. However, it is of theoretical importance in that it gives an explicit expression for the solution of the system. It is named after Gabriel Cramer The system of equations is represented in matrix multiplication form as:
    A x c
where the square matrix A is invertible and the vector x is the column vector of the variables: ( x i The theorem then states that: where A i is the matrix formed by replacing the i th column of A by the column vector c
