I'd be curious to see what such a thing looks like. The main problem I see
with variable crank length, aside from probable lack of strength, is the
fact that there will probably be some "extra" crank sticking out when you
have your pedal at a short setting. This extra part would probably be very
annoying to pedal around.

I'll have to differ with my MUni riding partner here. He seems to think that
it's impossible to pedal over 100 rpm on a unicycle. On the trails, maybe.
On level ground, it's easy. Anyway, pedaling slow on a unicycle, on level
ground, is not bad for you knees like pedaling too slow on a bicycle, while
trying to go fast, is. On level ground, a unicycle doesn't require much
strain to keep moving. On a bike, the pressure of the wind resistance
combined with a low cadence puts a greater strain on the knees.
Though it puts more strain on your knees than casual bicycling, I don't
agree that unicycling is bad for your knees. Running/jogging is much worse, as is any kind of impact activity. On a unicycle your feet are going around

EPISODES FROM A LIFE OF CRANK
Danielle is in her twenties. She has lived on the Northern Cheyenne reservation all her life. She describes the In's and mostly the Out's of the life of 6 years of meth use.
The Addiction Starts
"I didn't really wanna get into crank because I didn't know what it was about."
Danielle was smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol before she tried crank. She ran into an old friend of hers who was a dealer. "He introduced me to crank." He wanted Danielle to start selling weed for him. "So I started selling weed, and knowing that he had crank too. I didn't really wanna get into it because I didn't know what it was about." One night Danielle was drunk to the point that she was sick. Her dealer asked her if she wanted a line of crank "So I said, 'Yeah, why not?' It sobered me up because he gave me such a big line I wasn't used to it. It was about half a quarter." She liked the fact that it seemed to sober her up. "So I asked him if I could get some from him." He agreed to give her some, since she was selling weed for him. "I was kinda scared of it myself. It only been so many times since I first tried it." "I kinda wanted to see what it was about, 'cause everyone would talk about it. I was young then, how it sobered you up that was my main thing 'cause I liked to drink. Sometimes I'd get too drunk for myself. I'd hate that feeling so that line would sober me up. After I'd have that line I'd go to my drinking again."

Really Hyman, will you ever thank our hosts for their
life's work which we admire enough to want to be
in on their conversations? There is something in the
idea that even when we have had more than enough
to eat and everything else, we still want to be heard.
Is there not something of an infinite want in your life
when you write so often to chastise so many on
account of their knowledge. I know I write more
often than you do; but when I read your repetitive critique of our hosts I feel ashamed of all I write because I see too much in common between us in the matter of frequency in the matter of our infinite desire to speak before we are spoken to. Your friend, John

Forstater must know that the literature will never
include, nor should it, nor would it mean anything
if it did, the Mosler name alongside all the other
name tags social scientists put in their footnotes.
And certainly no voter will ever go into the polling
place thinking along the lines expressed by
Forstater below.
So this is not a matter of being a crank I know;
I'm one of the crankiest at PKT. It is a matter of communicating even better than Vickrey did or Eisner does. And of being reasonably correct. John Gelles: Vote for an Individual Estate Account (IEA) jjgelles@rain.org

Maine Antique Digest Of all the vessels I've owned over the years (about 9 and counting) I'd have to say I like my Old Town Discovery the best. O.K., I know this is a free country, so before you e-mail me let me add that I know I don't HAVE to say anything I don't want to - even about Old Town canoes - but in this case I'd still say my Discovery is my favorite. Maybe it's because a canoe - even an exquisite Old Town - is such a modest craft and I generally paddle my unassuming Old Town on a body of water known as the Little Androscoggin River - a lowly tributary and one of the least pretentious of Maine's minor rivers. We know it affectionately as the 'Little Andy.' Everyone has heard of the powerful Penobscott, the mighty Kennebec and the big and smelly Androscoggin. But few have ever heard about the unassuming Little Androscoggin. Fact is our 'Little Andy' is so anonymous among Maine's many rivers that, even though I'm not a betting man, I'd be willing to make a sizable wager (with the right bookie) that most people outside of Oxford County and parts of Androscoggin County have never even heard of the small but honest Little Andy. Maybe that's because the 'Little Andy' begins life when it spills out of another small, obscure body of water in Western Maine known as "Christopher Lake" which is located in the remote, sleepy and cleverly concealed town of Bryant Pond.

    No. 24:
    THE WHEEL AND THE CRANK
    by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 24. Today, let's reinvent the wheel. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. A s nearly as we can tell from archaeological evidence, the wheel was invented somewhere in present-day Iraq or Iran around 3500 BC. That in itself is suprising, because it's so late in human history. The other odd thing about the wheel is that it stayed within Europe and Asia as long as it did. Wheels were hardly seen in the American hemisphere until they were brought into regular use by European settlers in the 17th century. There's evidence that 11th-century Mexicans had the concept, but no evidence of its general use. Of course, we've lived since birth with a hundred thousand different forms of the wheel. It's hard for us to imagine what a difficult concept it represents. But look at it, if you can, from the standpoint of someone who's never seen one. You understand movement in a straight line, and you understand the idea of turning things around. But can you make a connection between the two? Can you conceive of making a vehicle go forward by turning something around? We've all played the children's game of patting our head and rubbing our stomach at the same time. It's very hard to do, because it's hard to conceptualize these two very different kinds of motion at the same time.
