I wanted an antenna that .... Would not be too expensive . Would cover as many bands as possible. . Would not compromise on performance . Would be at least equal to a 3 El trapped commercial yagi on all bands, eg Th6 . Could be rotated by an inexpensive rotator . Would withstand severe weather conditions. . Could be built with readily available parts. . Would lend it self to future modification, experimentation etc . Could be fed simply with a single feedline. . Reasonable size. So, taking these requirements what was available..... Well first of all, virtually all commercial antennae were ruled out on cost and/or performance considerations. I looked seriously at the possibility of building a log periodic , but ruled it out on the grounds of size and complexity. So that left the Quad!! The Quad meets all the 10 listed requirements with a few disadvantages, these being -

crankup Tilt-over Tower. The design is rather clever , in that it usesonly one winch to both crank-up and tilt-over the tower.

EI7BA's Pages Mirror Site Home Links ... Crank-up Tilt-over Tower Crank-up Tilt-over Tower If you are thinking of building your own tower.... BEWARE ....THAT YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT A PROJECT THAT CAN KILL OR MAIM YOU......OR AN INNOCENT BYSTANDER....IN A VARIETY OF MESSY AND PAINFUL WAYS... Unless you are (or have) a competent Engineer , Welder , etc.. Remember that when you are manhandling many pounds weight of solid steel into position...ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN...!! If you have ANY doubts about your own capabilities, make sure that you use common sense, and enlist the help of competent people, and make sure that there are no children or pets in the vicinty when you are erecting a tower.... (OK.. OK..! The mother-in-law can watch.!!!!) (Pic of tabernacle with rotator) This Tower was built for me by Jim EI8GS. Jim is proprietor of his own engineering business, and does a lot of specialist metal fabrication, pipework, etc. He is an extremely able Engineer, and a devout "Ham". His main "affliction" is contesting....but, I guess, no one is perfect.....!! (Tilted over) (Pic of towerfully cranked down..Quad at about 33ft high)

Dvorak Total posts: 61 ADVERTISEMENT The Next Stage of Piracy The Digital Rights Management Operating System (DRMOS) www.politechbot.com The party was to celebrate the DMCA falling in line with the goals of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a global body set up by business interests that hope to make it a felony to do reverse engineering or to even openly discuss how software works. A long-term attack on freedom of speech is what is really going on here. Just ask that poor Russian kid who was arrested for doing nothing more than talking about the Adobe copy-protection schemes in a public forum. These are the same folks who want to license software in such a way that critical reviews would be deemed illegal by license agreement. This is serious stuff. The fact that the general news media seems nonplussed by all this concerns me greatly. The press advisory also made clear that a number of Asian and African ambassadors were invited. No mention was made of Germany or France. They've already signed on the WIPO dotted line. On the invitation list were people from countries like Albania, Burkina Faso, and Croatia. Apparently these were the folks who needed to have a chat. McCullagh evidently got into this event and took some pictures, which are posted on his site. The event looks to have been the typical dreadful gathering of stuffed shirts. The problem is, these are dangerous stuffed shirts that seem to have things their way all the time.
