Text from QMW Mathsoc Calendar August 2000 NIELS HENRIK ABEL b. 5 Aug 1802 Island of Finnoy d. 6 Apr 1829 Froland Abel was the son of a poor Protestant minister, he grew up in Gjerstad (South East Norway) where his family moved just after he was born. Abel went to the Cathedral School in Oslo in 1815 where his talent in mathematics was recognised by a teacher who introduced him to the classics of mathematical literature. He read works by Newton, Euler, Lagrange and Gauss, and this introduced him to the formality of mathematical reasoning. Abels father passed away in 1820 and the family was left with financial difficulties, but his teacher contributed and raised the funds for his entry to the University of Christiania (in Oslo) in 1821. He obtained a preliminary degree from the university in 1822, but he continued his studies independently with further subsidies obtained by his teacher. The first papers Abel published were in 1823 in the Magazin for Naturvidenskaberne, these papers were on functional equations and integrals. Abels friends urged the Norwegian government to grant him a fellowship to study in Germany and France. While waiting for the outcome Abel published (in 1824) his proof of the impossibility of solving the general solution of the fifth degree algebraically. He was hoping this proof would bring him recognition. He sent a pamphlet containing this proof to Gauss, who dismissed it, failing to recognise that the famous problem had been solved. During the winter of 1825-26, Abel and his Norwegian friends went to Berlin. Here they met August Leopold Crelle. With encouragement from Abel and the Swiss Jakob Steiner, Crelle founded his "Journal for pure and applied mathematics" in 1826. The first volume was supported by both Steiner and Abel. With Crelle's encouragement this included an elaborated version of Abel's work on quintic equations.

July-August 2000 Computing Science On the Teeth of Wheels Brian Hayes Note: This document is available in other formats F or many years, the basic raw material of the computer industry was not silicon but brass. The calculators of Wilhelm Schickard, Blaise Pascal and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz were all based on the meshing of metal gears. Later, Charles Babbage conceived elaborate fantasies of gearwork for his calculating engines. Later still, Vannevar Bush put gears and other rotating parts at the heart of his differential analyzer. And all of these inventors were foreshadowed by anonymous artisans in the city of Rhodes in the first century b.c., who assembled more than 30 gears in a remarkable calendrical computer known as the Antikythera mechanism. These examples testify to the importance of gears in the history of computing. Less obvious is the importance of computing in the history of gears. I was ignorant of the connection myself until quite recently, when I went looking in the library for a work on number theory and found myself making a detour into the engineering shelves. I learned there that the designers of gear trains have not merely borrowed ideas from mathematics but have also developed some of those ideas on their own and lent them back to the mathematicians. Mechanical engineers doubtless know all about this two-way traffic between math and mechanism, but others may find the computational roots of gear design as surprising as I did.
