IRA Niels Abel was one of the innovators in the field of elliptic functions, discoverer of Abelian functions and one of the leaders in the use of rigor in mathematics. His work was so revolutionary that one mathematician stated: "He has left mathematicians something to keep them busy for five hundred years." However, his life did not mirror his mathematical success and his story is one of the most tragic in the sciences. Abel's first main contribution to mathematics came before entering college. For hundreds of years, mathematicians had searched in vain to discover the general solution for the quintic equation a x + b x + c x + d x + e x + f = . Abel developed what he thought was the answer. Holmboe and Hansteen knew there was no one in Norway with the ability to understand if the answer was correct, so they sent the paper to the mathematician Ferdinand Degen in Denmark. Before receiving an answer, Abel discovered a mistake in his figures and questioned if there was an answer. Taking the tract that there was not, he eventually proved that an algebraic solution to the quintic equation was impossible. More important, however, Degen suggested that Abel take up the subject of elliptic integrals, which would become the focus of his work and the source of his fame. Before entering the University of Oslo in 1821, Abel's father died, leaving his son to support his mother and six siblings. Unable to meet his financial needs, he relied on grants from the university, gifts from his math professors and tutoring positions to keep his family afloat. However, his mathematics flourished. After fulfilling the requirements for graduation in one year, he was left on his own to study. In 1823, he published his first important paper on definite integrals, which included the first ever solutions of an integral equation. He also produced another valuable work on the integration of functions. Both of these works would have brought him instant renown and a professorship if anyone would have read them. Unfortunately, the works were written in Norwegian while the leading mathematicians of Europe wrote in French and German. The papers were ignored.

Prusya'da bir çok yolun yapýmýnda görev aldý. 1826 yýlýnda kendi adýyla anýlan ünlü "Crelle Matematik Dergisi" çýkardý. Bu dergi, Avrupa matematiðinin ilerlemesine büyük katkýsý olan bir harekettir. 1828 yýlýnda "Mimarlýk Dergisi" ni kurdu. Ayný yýl Berlin Bilimler Akademisine üye seçildi. Kendisi geliþ yönüyle bir matematikçi olmamasýna karþýn, özel olarak matematikle ilgilenmiþ ve bu alanda kendisi de matematik yayýnlarýnda bulunmuþtur. Matematikçilere sonsuz destek saðlamýþ ve onlarýn buluþlarýný yayýnlayarak tanýnmalarýný saðlamýþtýr. Birçok ilmi eseri vardýr. 1856 yýlýnda Berlin'de ölmüþtür.

    Neils Henrick Abel was one of the first explorers into the world of functions and discovered Abelian functions. The life of Abel is one of the most tragic in all of the sciences.
    Abel's Early Life
    On August 5, 1802 Niels Henrick Abel was born in Finnoy, Norway to a Lutheran minister. Shortly after he was born, Abel and his eight family members moved to Gjerstad, Norway. Abel was educated at home until the age of 13, which is when he was admitted to the Cathedral School in Oslo. At Oslo, his math was rather unimpressive, but when his teacher was dismissed for beating the pupils, Abel became good friends with his new instructor, Bernt Michael Holmboe. Holmboe was supportive of Abel because of Abel's ability in mathematics. Holmboe encouraged Abel with books and problems, but Abel quickly found himself teaching his instructor because of his vast amount of knowledge. Accepted to the Cathedral School at the age of 13.

    A BIOGRAFI NIELS HENRIK ABEL Written by Maria Moksnes and Katrine Sandnes. Abel was born 5, August 1812 in Finnøy in Ryfylke. He moved with his family to Gjerstad in Aust - Agder, when he was two years old. Abel was second oldest out of 6 children. His father Søren Georg Abel had a drinking problem, and he died when Abel was only 18 years old. Also his mother Marie Sørensen was a alcoholic, and the children and she had big economical problems after the fathers death. Abel got a scolarship on the Katedralscool in Oslo, when he was 13 years old. Mathematic was his best subject from the start, but when he got Holmboe (*) as a new mathematical teacher big things started to happen. Holmboe became a great inpirationsourse to Abel, and he was well known for his interesting teaching. He also lent Abelbooks in higher mathematics, and guided him to work with works of well known mathematicians. In 1821 he started to study at the Universety in Oslo. He had economical problems, but got to live at the dorm "Regensen" for free. In 1823, Abel published his first important paper on definite integrals, which included the first solutions of an integral equation. He also produced another valuable work of the intergration of functions. The same year Abel had his first trip to Copenhagen. In Denmark he worked with the solution of the theorem of the elliptic functions. Abel also got to travel to Europe in 1825 -1827. In Berlin he met August Leopold Crelle. Crelle started to publish a mathematical paper, were Abel got 6 of his mathematical works published. When Abel got to Paris he presented his new "masterpiece" on elliptic functions and integrals which included Abels theorem, to the French Academy of Sciences.

    I'm going to do my best to get something done this weekend, and I'm going to try to enforce that with a "no new posts" rule.     Niels Henrik Abel hadde lukkelege barneår i Gjerstad. Ungane til presten stod sjølvsagt i ei særstilling, men dei var aktive i leik saman ungane i bygda. Det er fortald om Niels Henrik at han var ein hardhaus. Han symde fortare enn andre, og rann på ski ned bakkar som var så bratte at dei andre ikkje torde.

    Who was Niels Henrik Abel?

    Childhood Gjerstad 1804-1815
    Niels Henrik Abel was born on the 5 th of August 1802 at Finnøy in Ryfylke where his father Søren Georg Abel was the parish priest. Niels Henrik was the second son of the family. Niels Henrik's grandfather, Hans Mathias Abel was at that time the parish priest in Gjerstad, and when he died in 1803 Søren Georg Abel succeeded his father. In the summer 1804 he moved to Gjerstad with his wife Anne Marie and their two sons. For both of them it was like coming home Søren Georg had spent his childhood at the vicarage of Gjerstad and Anne Marie was from the town of Risør, situated not far from Gjerstad. Niels Henrik Abel and his brothers had their first encounter with education was at home, tutored by their father and other members of the family. When Søren Georg entered Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament) Lars Thorsen Vævestad became the children’s teacher. Niels Henrik Abel had a happy childhood in Gjerstad. As children of the parish priest they had of course a special position in the local community but they joined in actively playing with other children. It is said that Niels Henrik was a tough boy. He swam quicker than any other and skied downhill where nobody else dared.

    BIOGRAFÍA DE AUGUST FERDINAND MOEBIUS.
    Nació el 17 de noviembre de 1790, en Schulpforta, Saxoni (ahora Alemania). Murió el 26 de setiembre de 1868 en Leipzig (Alemania).
    Moebius fue el único hijo de Johann Heinrich Moebius, un profesor de danza, quien murió cuando August tenía 3 años. Su madre era descendiente de Martin Lutero. Fue educado en casa hasta los 13 años, cuando ya demostrando interés en las matemáticas, asistió a colegio en Schulpforta en 1803.
    En 1809 termino el colegio e ingreso como estudiante a la Universidad de Leipzig. Su familia quería que estudiara derecho y por cierto comenzó a estudiar. Sin embargo pronto descubrió que no era una materia que le satisficiera y hacia mediados de primer año de estudio decidió seguir sus propias preferencias por sobre las de su familia. Por consiguiente emprendió el estudio de matemáticas, astronomía y física.
    El profesor que más influyó sobre él durante su tiempo en Leipzig fue su profesor de astronomía, Karl Mollweide, si bien era un astrónomo, KM es bien conocido por un número de descubrimientos matemáticos, en particular las relaciones trigonométricas de Mollweide, que descubrió en 1807-09 y el mapa de proyección de M que preserva los ángulos, así pues es una proyección conformal.
    En 1813 viajó a Gottingen, donde estudió astronomía bajo la dirección de Gauss. Gauss era director del Observatorio, pero por supuesto el más grande matemático de sus días, de modo que nuevamente Moebius estudió bajo la tutela de un astrónomo cuyos intereses eran matemáticos. De Gottingen Moebius fue a Halle donde estudió bajo Johann Pfaff, el profesor de Gauss. Allí estudió matemáticas antes que astronomía, así que a esta altura estaba trabajando muy firmemente en ambos campos.
