Most of the original 1500 copies pressed now seem to have found good homes. Johanna Crighton and I and everyone else concerned are grateful to our many friends and colleagues who have helped to spread the word, and to the Cambridge University Press and the American Physical Society for their recent promotional effort. As many who read this will know, David Crighton was a visionary leader and promoter of talent as well as a brilliant researcher in his own right. He was my Head of Department before cancer took him from us in April 2000. He was one of the key figures in the establishment of the new Cambridge Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Millennium Mathematics Project and worked in many other ways for science and its public understanding. The concert was held on 18 May 2001 at Johanna Crighton's initiative, to celebrate David's life and to help with fundraising in his memory. Because mathematics and music were equally special for David, Johanna's memorial effort is in aid of young mathematicians and young musicians. The memorial CDs are beautiful recordings of some of the most glorious classical music ever written, receiving a high-powered, passionately committed performance by artists who knew David personally, making it a very special occasion. The recording, using state-of-the-art digital technology, captures the spirit of the occasion and includes a few extempore words from Johanna at the close. Here are two brief audio clips in the form of .mp3 files

David Crighton was the son of George Wolfe Johnson Crighton and Violet Grace Garrison. He was born in Llandudno, Wales because, due to the bombing of London during World War II, his mother had been sent there so that her child might be born in safety. His secondary education was at Watford Grammar School, but there his first interests were not in mathematics but in classics. Only in his final two years at secondary school did he became interested in mathematics and this was brought about by one of the masters at Watford Grammar School who said:- ... whatever else, he will never be any good at mathematics. Crighton related later in his life that it was this challenge which made him change from his intended career in classics, and switch to mathematics and physics for his main school subjects over his final two years at secondary school. After completing his studies at Watford Grammar School, Crighton entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1961. However he only completed the first two parts of the Mathematical Tripos for, despite obtaining a First in both parts, he preferred to end his education in 1964 with a BA and to take a lecturing position at Woolwich Polytechnic. We should note that Woolwich Polytechnic has since then became the University of Greenwich, but at the time Crighton joined it, it did not have university status. Pedley writes in [2]:-

He was head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge for nine years and master of Jesus College, Cambridge for three years. Crighton was born on 15 November 1942 in Llandudno, North Wales, to which his parents had been evacuated in World War II to avoid German bombing. Christened David (but not Lloyd!) George, and claiming no Welsh ancestry, he captained his school at rugby and won a mathematics scholarship to Cambridge. He graduated as a top student in 1964. In his first position, as a lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic, Crighton taught mathematics to mature students in night school, where, he claimed, he mastered the elements of crowd control. But, having reached the top of that career path by the age of 24, he switched his sights to research. In 1967, he joined my group in the mathematics department of Imperial College as a research assistant.

David George Crighton
On 12th April 2000, to the intense distress of all who knew him, Professor David Crighton, who in the relatively brief period since his admission as Master in 1997 had gained the deep respect and devoted admiration of all in the College for his wise and calm leadership, his humour, humanity and approachability, his committed support for the academic and musical life of the College and his astonishing courage in the face of adversity, lost a heroic battle against cancer, which had been diagnosed early the previous year. He was only 57. The funeral of the Master took place in the College Chapel on 20th April. The vast congregation (many of whom were unable to find seats, and had to stand in the transepts or at the back of the Chapel) included not only the Vice-Chancellor, many heads of Colleges and other dignitaries but also a remarkable number of old and current members of the College, including many students who had returned to Cambridge specially for the service, and of the College staff. The eulogy address was given by Professor Shon Ffowcs Williams, Master of Emmanuel College, with whom the Master had worked as his Research Assistant at Imperial College in the 1960s.

16. Obituary For David George Crighton
Professor david George crighton FRS. Outside science, david crighton's passionwas music in general, and the opera of Wagner in particular.
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/dgc/hkm.html
Professor David George Crighton FRS
David Crighton, talking with school children in Gorky USSR, October 1990, where he was the first western scientist to be permitted to stay overnight, following perestroika. As Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in Cambridge since 1991, and as Master of Jesus College since 1997, David Crighton carried a huge burden of responsibility, and did so with a combination of authority, wisdom, and energy that was (by common consensus) almost superhuman. Tragically, he was struck by cancer early in 1999, when at the height of his powers; in the face of increasing difficulties, and to the immense, indeed overawed, admiration of his colleagues, he continued to work at full stretch, relinquishing none of his heavy responsibilities, until just two weeks before his death. It was a sad twist of fate that his last letter to his Department, dictated from his hospital bed on 31 March, reported the death of his distinguished predecessor as Professor of Applied Mathematics in the University of Cambridge, G.K.Batchelor FRS, whose Times obituary appeared on 12th April, the very day that David Crighton died. Crighton's speciality was the field of Aeroacoustics, in which he followed in the footsteps of Sir James Lighthill, who had established the fundamental principles of the subject in the 1950s. Crighton was one of a group who applied these principles to a range of problems of great practical importance in Aerodynamics, with particular attention to the vital problem of noise control in relation to aircraft design. He studied particularly the problem of noise generation by the high-speed jets from aeroengines, by rotating propellors and fans, and by flow over parts of the aircraft fuselage and wing flaps, of crucial importance during aircraft take-off and landing.

    David G. Crighton
Then, by chance, he met John Ffowcs Williams, a reader in mathematics at Imperial College and an expert in aeroacoustics, and became his research assistant (at less than a quarter of the salary of a senior lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic). His PhD at Imperial College followed in 1969; he remained there until 1974, when he was appointed a research associate in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge. He visited the department only once, however, as he was immediately-apparently out of the blue though in fact at the instigation of Sir James Lighthill-appointed professor of applied mathematics at the University of Leeds at the age of 32. David immediately made a difference, motivating his colleagues, many of them older than himself, to become active in research, to raise research funds, and to take on students. He himself had 15 research students in his time at Leeds. When he had been there only about a year, a new research student asked if they could fix a time for a regular weekly meeting. David looked at his diary and said "How about Monday at 7 o'clock?" The student asked "a.m. or p.m.?" to which the reply was "Whichever you prefer." By 1986, when David left, the applied mathematics department at Leeds had risen to be one of the top three or four in the country, a position it retains to this day. David's spells as head of department, chairman of the School of Mathematics, and chairman of the Science Board (effectively dean) left indelible marks of his imagination, energy, and effectiveness.
